Java 2 Software Development Kit (SDK) updates include bug fixes (not new features or functionality). The updates have been developed based on key customer issues and feedback on the previous FCS release. There are over 2000 bug fixes. Two new garbage collectors have been added to improve application performance in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and several significant enhancements have been made to the Java Plug-in.

JAM Code Released -- Prototype

A member of the Jini Network Technology User Group, has announced that Sun has released the code for JAM, the Job and Application Manager. JAM is a prototype written in the Java programming language and co-developed by Sun and the Swiss Center for Scientific Computing (CSCS). It was developed under open source as part of the Sun ONE Grid Engine project.

May Allow Remote Attackers to Gain the Privileges of the Sendmail Daemon

A local or remote unprivileged user may be able to gain unauthorized root access or cause a denial of service due to a buffer overflow in the sendmail(1M) daemon. There are no reliable symptoms that would show the described issue has been exploited to gain unauthorized root access to a host. Until patches can be applied, sites may wish to block access to the affected service from untrusted networks and use a firewall.
