Technology from Sun and LocatioNet is being used by NEPs
to deliver tested and tuned mobile information applications for today's
competitive wireless market. The Mobile Location Services Reference
Architecture, based on an iForceSM solution, is designed to help
customers rapidly develop revenue-generating mobile location services,
such as "Point of Interest" finders to locate a restaurant en route, or
"Asset Trackers" that allow managers to track and route delivery
vehicles.
The Mobile Location Services Reference Architecture is built on Sun
hardware, including the recently announced 12-way Sun FireTM V1280
server, Sun FireTM 280R server and Sun FireTM V480 volume servers,
and with LocatioNet's LBS Middleware, GIS Engine and Applications.
Other hardware and software used in the testing are: the Foundry
Networks ServerIron 400 Internet Web Switch, Oracle 9i RDBMS,
SolarisTM 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE), the SunTM ONE
Directory Server and the SunTM ONE Application Server (formerly
iPlanetTM products) and SunTM Management Center 3.0 software.
When the solution is combined with the modularity and scalability of
Sun's system architecture and running on SunTM Open Net Environment
(Sun ONE) and JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM)
technologies, it enables more choice and flexibility for future
investments as the adoption of wireless devices, including PDAs and
cellular phones, and usage of location-based services grow.
Sun and LocatioNet worked closely with the Austrian communications
company, ONE, Connect Austria GmbH, to design, develop and deploy
ONE's mobile location based services built on ONE's existing GSM and
location determination network infrastructure.
"LocatioNet addresses the challenges of integrating applications,
mobile device interfaces and data from disparate sources.
Complementary, Sun provides a highly available and scalable hardware
platform," said Mr. Joergen Bang-Jensen, ONE CEO. "We believe that the
Mobile Location Services (MLS) based on the Reference Architecture from
LocatioNet and Sun is the best solution to address the changing needs
of our customers. This reference architecture offers us a powerful,
scalable and flexible platform."
"A major part of our customers' business is to provide a tested,
reliable and scalable infrastructure to carriers worldwide. To this
end, Sun and LocatioNet's Mobile Location Services Reference
Architecture, including industry-leading servers, storage and software
products, is a very useful proven solution from a customer
perspective," said Ofer Tziperman, CEO, LocatioNet Systems. "We feel
very positive about being able to offer our joint customers a full
turnkey solution based on the Mobile Location Services Reference
Architecture on top of the existing, industry leading mobile location
services solutions."
"Sun's Reference Architectures deliver a powerful combination of
hardware based on the 64-bit SPARCR platform and Solaris OE,
with some of the industry's best third-party software
solutions, and the proven expertise of Sun's engineers," said Ravi
Pendekanti, senior director of reference architectures and customer
ready systems programs at Sun. "The marquee customers
working with Sun as a vendor of choice in the wireless market and
leveraging Sun's Mobile Location Services Reference Architecture, is a
testament to the value Sun consistently delivers to customers."
