Sun Fire 15K System Shines in SAP SD Benchmark Test
The 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu CPUs Provide 44 Percent Faster Business Workload Processing

Using a two-tier configuration of the SAP Standard Application Sales and Distribution (SD) Benchmark, SAP R/3 Release 4.6C, Sun measured the throughput rate of its Sun FireTM 15K system with 104 1.2 GHz UltraSPARCR III CPUs and 576 GB of memory. The tested system ran in combination with Sun StorEdgeTM T3 arrays and achieved 813,000 fully business-processed order line items per hour. The average dialog response time attained in supporting 8000 SAP SD Benchmark users was 1.81 seconds, a 44 percent faster rate than was demonstrated per CPU than the system tested with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III CPUs attained.

The tested Sun Fire 15K system was running the SolarisTM Operating Environment (Solaris OE) and Oracle9i database. Results clearly demonstrate effective MaxCPU capability for application and database tiers, even at large CPU counts. The capability of the Sun Fire 15K system to accommodate consolidated workloads on a single server answers a need for dealing with server sprawl, TCO reduction and simplification of operations.

Earlier results using the same benchmark found the Sun Fire 15K 76-way 900 MHz UltraSPARCR III Cu CPU with 288 GB of memory capable of running 414,000 order line items per hour with a response time of 1.88 seconds for a pool of 4,100 SAP SD Benchmark users. The system was running Solaris 8 OE and the Oracle8i database. The improved results obtained with the more recent test were attributed to advances in software and processors.

The SAP SD Benchmark, which fully complies with the SAP Benchmark Council's issued benchmark regulations and has been audited and certified by SAP AG, is a two-tier e-business test that simulates full business workloads of complete order processing and invoice processing, demonstrating the ability to run both the application and database software on a single system. The benchmark represents the critical tasks performed in real-world e-business environments.
