Enterprise-class Availability, Scalability at Entry-level Price
Sun Fire V1280 Sever Ideal for Mainframe Rehosting, HPTC

The new Sun FireTM V1280 system is the first rack-optimized, 12-way system to deliver enterprise-class availability and scalability at entry-level prices. The largest memory of virtually any 12-way system in its class, plus its Dynamic Reconfiguration technology and hot-swappable CPU/memory boards, make the Sun Fire V1280 server ideal for mainframe rehosting, Wintel server consolidation and High Performance Technical Computing (HPTC).

"Sun is expanding its midrange server family with more enterprise-class features at value price points," said Clark Masters, executive vice president, Enterprise Systems Products Group for Sun Microsystems. "Customers have told us that while lower acquisition costs are an incentive to buy in today's economy, the real attraction is lower total cost of ownership in a rack-optimized solution for server consolidation."

According to a finding published by IDEAS International, the three-year cost of ownership for hardware, software and support of the rack-optimized, 12-way Sun Fire V1280 system undercuts the costs for the HP rp7405 by 15 percent.

The Sun Fire V1280 features the SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) software stack and the SolarisTM Operating Environment (Solaris OE), whose binary compatibility ranges from one to 106 CPUs, allowing users to deploy applications from Sun systems ranging from the Sun FireTM Blade systems to the Sun FireTM 15K server.

The rack-optimized design of the Sun Fire V1280 system allows an additional Sun Fire V1280 system and/or complementary components such as the Sun StorEdgeTM 3300 Series of products and the Sun StorEdgeTM 3510 Fibre Channel array for direct and SAN attached storage in the same rack, providing more CPUs per foot print and greater investment protection.

The 96 GB of memory in the Sun Fire V1280 system, one of the largest configurations in a single 12-way UNIXR system, provides a secure, scalable and cost effective 64-bit platform for Wintel server consolidation and mainframe rehosting. Customers can consolidate multiple Windows database server applications onto a single Sun Fire V1280 system. The 9.6 GB/sec. system bandwidth helps ensure that applications run smoothly and provides the scalability needed for applications that cannot scale in a Windows environment.

The automatic fault detection and recovery features of the Sun Fire V1280 system support SunTM Cluster 3.0 software configurations, providing customers with higher availability of data and services. In addition, Sun's comprehensive portfolio of services, including Migration Services and Assessment Services, can help customers quickly and cost-effectively architect, implement and manage deployment of the Sun Fire V1280 system into their IT environments.
