The U.S. Department of Transportation has launched TranStats, a Web portal used by its Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) to present detailed analysis of more than 100 databases containing transportation-related content. TranStats was developed using the iForceSM solution for Economical Data Management, which is based on the Enterprise Data Warehouse Reference Architecture jointly developed by Sun and Sybase Inc. The iForce Solution for Economical Data management is based upon Sybase's Adaptive Server IQ enterprise analytical engine and Sun FireTM V880 servers.

Over 15,000 users (more than 100 of them concurrent) visit TranStats daily to use the following features:

  • A single point of access to 2.5 TB of data in more than 100 transportation-related databases with selective downloads that enable users to choose variables of interest and download the data directly to a personal computer for analysis using any database, spreadsheet or statistical package.

  • Online documentation with profiles of each database, summary information about included tables, definitions of data and code information for data variables

"Implementing TranStats with the iForce Solution -- [the] Sun Fire V880 servers with Sybase Adaptive Server IQ -- has been a key to the success of this e-Government initiative, allowing citizens to penetrate the federal bureaucracy for data and information in a way that couldn't be done before," said Jeff Butler, assistant director, Bureau of Transportation Statistics' Office of Statistical Computing. "Users of TranStats are truly amazed at the speed with which they can get answers to even the most complex transportation questions. In statistical analyses that we have performed internally using business intelligence tools from SAS Institute, Inc., for example, complex queries on over 250 million rows are being processed in just seconds. This kind of performance is also critical for customers using the TranStats web portal, who expect real-time results."

TranStats, which was introduced in September 2002, is an important element in the BTS mission of providing data to the national transportation community in the expectation that better transportation systems will ultimately result from sharing this information. Numerous federal agencies use TranStats, including the Federal Highway Administration, Maritime Administration, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other users include planning organizations, trade associations, Congress, the media and the general public.
