To further its goal of making the JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) version 1.4 the standard for JavaTM technology Web Services development and interoperability, Sun has included full support for the "Basic Profiles" specification proposed by the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I). Support continues for such Web Services standards as WSDL, SOAP, ebXML and UDDI, making the J2EE platform both the data model and programming model developers require for building end-to-end applications.

"For nearly a decade, JavaTM technology has fostered innovation throughout the industry. By bringing Web Services standards and interoperability together in the J2EE technology, we are evolving the Java technology Web Services platform into the industry standard for developing and deploying interoperable Web Services. This will help accelerate the next wave of innovations that ease development and create opportunity for businesses," said Mark Bauhaus, vice president of Java Web Services at Sun. "With support for WS-I basic profile, J2EE platform v 1.4 demonstrates Sun's commitment to open standards. Sun is fully engaged in collaborative work with industry organizations such as WS-I in order to help ensure Web Services interoperability becomes pervasive."

The J2EE platform 1.4, now in the final development stage through the Java Community ProcessSM program (JCPSM), will incorporate a new level of abstraction that will simplify the development process and speed up its completion. The new version is expected to be available by summer 2003, and applications such as the SunTM ONE Application Server (formerly known as the iPlanetTM Application Server) and the SunTM ONE Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) (formerly ForteTM for JavaTM) are expected to support the J2EE platform 1.4 by Q403. The Oracle9i Application Server is also expected to support the new version by summer 2003. [...read more...]
