Mailcenter Solution from Sendmail
Fights Spam and Viruses
December 19, 2002,
Volume 58, Issue 3

The Mailcenter solution from Sendmail provides a cost-effective message hosting and access solution that overlays the message processing, spam and virus-fighting, and policy enforcement capabilities in Sendmail's Mailstream Manager. The solution creates a rich, reliable ecosystem that adapts to existing architectures to minimize disruptions in service, excessive costs or redesign.

Mailcenter has a modular design that allows organizations to scale the messaging system across inexpensive hardware to diverse user communities, including service providers, universities and enterprises employing large, decentralized workforces.

Mailcenter surrounds Sendmail's industrial strength IMAP and POP server with its template-driven Webmail and wireless access server and introduces Intelligent Inbox directory services and personal delivery filters which provide users control over how they receive and access their mail.

"Because of Sendmail Mailcenter's flexible architecture, management console and filtering capabilities, we have improved our ability to centrally manage our worldwide messaging system," said Chris Baldone, Director of IT Infrastructure for Transocean, the world's largest offshore drilling contractor. "We have a remote population of users who rely on satellite transmission to relay messages to and from our mobile offshore drilling rigs. Our messaging environment requires an open standards-based email solution that integrates with our corporate groupware environment."

Mailcenter's features include:

  • Increased user productivity: Users control powerful server-side, personal delivery filters to presort mail as it is delivered to their mailbox; to set personal spam management policies including sender blacklists and rejections; to generate notifications when important messages arrive; and to personalize their auto-replies

  • Accessibility: Mailcenter users can choose multiple access clients from traditional user agents like Outlook, Eudora, Netscape or Pine, combined with PDAs, smart phone and Webmail to give them true anytime, anywhere, any device, email access

  • Tested scalability and performance

  • Ease of administration

  • Content policy enforcement

"Mailcenter is about choice -- choice of access client, choice of features and choice of hardware. We offer an exceptionally affordable mail system that excels both on traditional UNIXR hardware and even better on HP Proliant systems running Linux," said Jeff Morris, director of the Mailcenter product line at Sendmail, Inc.

Elements of the Mailcenter comprehensive email solution include:

  • Sendmail Advanced Message Server 2 ("SAMS"), an industrial strength IMAP and POP access server

  • Sendmail Intelligent Inbox uses powerful Sieve scripts to dynamically sort mail into IMAP folders, reject, forward and respond to messages

  • Sendmail Mobile Message Server 2 ("SMMS") is a carrier-class, flexibly scalable Webmail and wireless solution enabling users to read, compose, save, delete, forward and reply to messages from wherever they are

  • Sendmail Mailstream Manager, SMTP email routing, anti-virus, anti-spam and policy enforcement solution

Mailcenter is available for the SolarisTM Operating Environment (Solaris OE), Red Hat Linux Advanced Server and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server. SAMS, SMMS and Mailstream Manager are also available on AIX and Windows.
