Network identity has become "the fundamental Web service," according to
Jonathan Schwartz, Sun executive vice president of software, as retailers
connect with each other, their customers and their suppliers. He
confirmed the "dominance of the network model of computing" in the marketplace,
and said customers are focusing on value, choice and operational efficiency.
Sun will host the iForce Partner Excellence Awards, a new awards
program co-sponsored by Computerworld to honor U.S. iForce partners who
have excelled in providing quality products, innovative solutions and
superior services to customers. The awards ceremony will
be on April 9, 2003, at the iForce Partner Summit in Orlando, FL

For insight into Sun's approach to the dynamic hardware-software
markets, Mark Jones, news editor of InfoWorld, turned to John Fowler,
the company's CTO for Software. According to Fowler, opportunity exists
in security, storage and management issues. Fowler also sheds light on
Sun's plans for N1, its hopes for influencing the standards process
since joining the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I),
and a corporate effort to focus on solving actual customer needs.
Philips' SKYLight system consists of a gamma camera with flexible,
robotic arms that move around a patient and allow doctors to gather
data from longer scan tests for early diagnosis of life-threatening
diseases and other critical medical conditions. The SKYLight system is
controlled with sophisticated software programs running on a platform
of UltraSPARC processor-based hardware and Solaris Operating
Environment (Solaris OE).
The Solaris 9 12/02 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) (SPARC
Platform Edition) builds on the success of the Solaris 9 OE.
Enhancements in the areas of scalability, availability, manageability
and security define the industry-leading UNIX system operating
environment. This Solaris 9 OE update integrates fixes and performance
improvements, as well as select new technologies in a tested,
easy-to-install configuration while maintaining guaranteed binary
compatibility with prior Solaris OE releases.
With Solaris Resource Manager software, customers can allocate,
control and monitor system resource usage. The latest version of
Solaris Resource Manager software, 1.3, includes the new functionality which
allows system administrators to limit physical memory usage at a
per-lnode or per-project basis.
Sun Microsystems is enhancing its data continuance solutions portfolio
by introducing the Solstice Backup Business Edition 6.1 software.
This new edition is designed for workgroup, departmental, small-business
and branch-office environments, providing a reliable,
easy-to-use high-performance data protection solution with
enterprise-class features. The software is available for Solaris
Operating Environment (Solaris OE) platforms and will support UNIX
systems, Linux, Windows and Netware clients with Client Paks.
The courseware in the hardware systems learning path is designed to help
system administrators, field service engineers and hardware support
professionals learn essential skills to install, configure, diagnose
and troubleshoot Sun hardware systems.
Fibre Channel Options from the Sun System Handbook lists storage
sub-systems that use Fibre Channel (FC). Components include SPARCstorage
arrays in the Model 100 and 200 series; FC Host Adapters such as the
SBus Dual FC Network Adapter, PCI Single FC Host Adapter and others.
Components for servers such as the Sun Enterprise 3500 server are
also listed.
A new 4 GB Low-cost Memory Expansion Kit is available
for Sun Fire 280R servers and Sun Blade 1000 workstations
and Sun Blade 2000 workstations. The modules in this kit are a
re-design of the original modules, making them lower-cost to the
customer and physically different from the original UltraSPARC
III processor-based memory modules that were used by these platforms
before.
Sun has released a flat 17-inch CRT monitor to the market. This new
monitor features a 0.24mm dot pitch flat screen with support for a 1280
x 1024@75/76Hz resolution while remaining backward compatible with the
previous Sun-branded 17-inch CRT monitor. The existing Sun 17-inch
monitor supporting 1152 x 900 resolution will be transitioned.
The 2003 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 9-12
in Las Vegas, Nevada, will host more than 250 wireless exhibitors and a
variety of wireless conferences and training programs. See the latest

Clark Masters, executive vice president and general manager of

the Sun Customer Ready Systems program (Sun CRS), SPARC processor-based

and manageability than past Sun racks, with 38 rack units (RUs) of space with
an industry-standard 900-mm depth.

Mark Carlsen, senior architect for Sun storage, discusses the Bluefin
CIM/WBEM standard, which provides customers with the ability to
implement plug-and-play storage devices from multiple vendors, while
still controlling and managing from a single, CIM/WEBM-based storage
management platform.

Sun LX50 server for Linux, Sun LX50 server for Solaris
Operating Environment (Solaris OE), Sun Blade 2000 workstation, and Sun
Fire V100 server to its line of product offerings
through the Sun Developer Hardware and Sun Startup programs.

GCC2C is a "GNU C/C++/Fortran/ObjectiveC to C" converter written as an
extension for the GCC compiler. It takes source code written for GCC and
outputs equivalent C code, which can then be fed into the target ANSI C
compiler. In tests, use of Forte or Sun ONE Studio C software
compilers (formerly Forte for Java) has shown significantly
improved performance with GCC compatibility.
In their 18-page Sun BluePrints OnLine article, Kristien Hens and
Peter Dennis recommend a free and easy-to-use alternative to VxVM
software, the traditional volume manager of choice for shared storage
in enterprise-level configurations. They suggest using Solaris
Volume Manager software, which is part of the Solaris 9 Operating
Environment (Solaris OE).
Author Alex Noordergraaf has updated his Sun BluePrints article,
"Minimizing the Solaris Operating Environment for Security" for the
Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE). The author provides
tips, instructions and preferred practices for minimizing the Solaris
OE to increase system security. Automating the installation process is
one way to boost security.
The Java Metadata Interface (JMI) specification implements a
dynamic, platform-neutral infrastructure that enables the creation,
storage, access, discovery and exchange of metadata (data about data). JMI enables platform-independent discovery and access of metadata. Sun is making a download of the JMI Specification API 1.0 available.
The Java Authentication and Authorization Service software package
enables services to authenticate and enforce access controls upon
users. It implements a Java technology version of the standard Pluggable
Authentication Module (PAM) framework and supports user-based authorization.
Java Authentication and Authorization Service software has been integrated
into the Java 2 Software Developers Kit, Standard Edition, v 1.4.
Specialty retailer Brookstone has partnered with RealRead to create an
electronic version of its 68-page holiday catalog to be emailed to
Brookstone prospects. The e-catalog does not require any
plug-in software nor any file download, it can be emailed as a
hyperlink in the email text and it looks exactly like the printed
version, featuring 3-D page turning.
Generics -- also commonly known as parameterized types -- have been
used in other computing languages for years. And now generics will be
added to the Java programming language with the 1.5 release. Paul
Mingardi's article, "Preparing for Generics: An Introduction," gives
examples of how generics can help Java technology programmers.

Sun ONE Web Server (formerly known as the iPlanet Web Server)
software and offer suggestions for users in choosing

The Netra High Availability (HA) Suite Foundation Services provide
a suite of reliable software services for building HA clusters and for
complementing existing HA frameworks that enable the deployment of
Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE) applications in an HA
environment. The Netra High Availability (HA) Suite Foundation Services
can be used to create a highly available, dynamically scalable cluster
of distributed nodes enabling applications to leverage the enhanced
reliability of the platform.
Powered by a 650-MHz UltraSPARC IIi processor, the Netra CP2160
CompactPCI (CPCI) single-board computer functions either as a system
controller, as a satellite in a CPCI
configuration or as a standalone, single-board computer in an embedded
environment and delivers host functionality while offloading
I/O-intensive functions from the main host processor.
The Netra CP2060/CP2080 CompactPCI (CPCI) satellite board is a
crucial building block that network equipment providers (NEPs) and carriers
can use when scaling and improving the availability of next-generation,
carrier-grade systems in the wireless, wireline and access arenas. With

CYA HOTBackup software is now available for use with Sybase's
relational database management system (RDBMS) Adaptive Server
Enterprise. CYA HOTBackup performs incremental hot backups of a
client's repository without requiring application downtime. In addition
to full application restores, CYA HOTBackup restores individual objects
to a system, with all related information intact.
Long View Systems (LVS) of Canada has selected Fidelia Inc.'s NetVigil
to add new capabilities to its Remote Managed Services (RMS)
infrastructure reporting portal. Fidelia's business service management
software will allow Long View's RMS customers to have on-demand access
to real-time status and performance reporting on servers, routers,
applications and other infrastructure resources.
