Solaris 9 Operating Environment Early Access Program
x86 Intel Platform Edition Set for Evaluation
December 2, 2002,
Volume 58, Issue 1

SolarisTM 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) x86 Customer Early Access software is now available for general testing and evaluation.

What's new in Solaris 9 OE software:

  • Integrated SunTM ONE Directory Server: the Sun ONE Directory Server (formerly known as the iPlanetTM Directory Server) has been integrated into Solaris 9 OE to provide native LDAP services.

  • Improved performance and scalability: an improved threading library and multiple page size support improve both the raw performance and the ability to use additional CPU resources, particularly for large, multithreaded applications

  • New security features: Kerberos 5 and Secure Shell for system administrators, new APIs -- including /dev/random -- for developers

  • SolarisTM Volume Manager: fully-integrated volume management software for setting up and maintaining concatenated, striped and mirrored disk volumes

  • SolarisTM 9 Resource Manager: integrated resource management features for controlling and allocating system resources

The Solaris 9 OE x86 Customer Early Access software is:

  • Not suitable for deployment on any production systems

  • Not supported and supplied as-is; please read the license agreement for additional restrictions and disclaimers for more information

  • Only available for the x86 platform

  • Is compatible with hardware configurations listed on the hardware compatibility page

Although Solaris 9 OE x86 Customer Early Access software is not supported by Sun, it has established an online community forum for collaboration. This forum is available to ask others within the online community technical questions or tips related to the Solaris x86 Early Access software release:
