Sun Releases New Versions of Rehosting Software Migration from IBM and PCM to Solaris OE Made Easier
With the release of SunTM ONE Mainframe Transaction Processing
software 8.0, SunTM ONE Mainframe Batch Manager software 10.0 and
SunTM ONE 3270 Pathway 2.0 (formerly known as SunTM 3270 Pathway
software), the migration of applications running on IBM and PCM to Sun
systems running the SolarisTM 8 and 9 Operating Environment (Solaris
OE) can be rehosted with little or no change.
The platform supported is the UltraSPARCR processor platform running the
Solaris OE for development systems. Production systems include the
Sun FireTM V480 and Sun FireTM V880 servers, the Sun EnterpriseTM 3500, 4500, 5500,
6500 and 10,000 servers and the Sun FireTM 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800 and
15K servers.
For customers using this software on UNIXR system
hardware from vendors other than Sun, an
upgrade will allow free transfer of existing licenses to Sun hardware
platforms. Competitive trade-ins for hardware from other vendors if eligible can
apply through IBB programs. A 90-day, media-only warranty applies.
Customers wishing to replace a mainframe with a Sun UNIX system will
appreciate a drastic improvement in TCO and, in many cases, substantial
performance improvements. IBM no longer has any competition in the
mainframe market and has increased its maintenance price on all but the
latest mainframes. In addition the software licenses for IBM
mainframes are very high.
It is important to recognize that these tools are not emulations but
natively ported versions of CICS and batch tools. Customers with a
Y2K-driven investment in updating COBOL applications will not have to
invest further in the retraining of end-users and system programmers.
Target applications should be written in COBOL, PL1 or C. Certain
DB2 databases can also be rehosted either using DB2 for UNIX systems or
Oracle. Workloads running on IMS, or IDMS, or workloads using TPF cannot
be migrated.
A comprehensive suite of services is available from Sun Professional
ServicesSM program, including an audit of a potential customer's
applications. The satisfactory findings of an audit all but guarantee
the success of the desired migration, which can be performed either by
the customer or by Sun. Customers can elect either to continue the SNA
used by their mainframes or migrate to a TCP/IP.
Certification for SunTM Cluster software is under study and not
currently offered but customers concerned with availability issues
can purchase backup licenses, which can be bought at reduced costs for
restoring systems.
With the release of these new software versions, Sun has begun the
transition from its price list of Sun Mainframe Transaction Processing
software 7.2, Sun Mainframe Batch Manager software 9.2 and Sun 3270
Pathway 1.5 software.
