Sun and Lucent Solutions in Asia, Europe and Latin America
Driving Complexity Out of Network Infrastructures

Sun and Lucent Technologies will expand their long term strategic alliance to deliver comprehensive, reliable and scalable business solutions to wireline and wireless service providers and enterprise customers. They will work together in Asia, Europe and Latin America and have put in place sales resources and other operational practices to make the selling of solutions more efficient and effective for service providers.

The Lucent and Sun teams are pursuing joint sales activities in the areas of IP Centrex central office solutions, customer relationship management, mobile high-speed data solutions and business continuity solutions.

Working together under the new alliance model, Lucent and Sun have also provided customers with solutions to address their unified messaging, mobility infrastructure and network management software initiatives.

"In today's telecom market, working with companies like Sun is another way we can deliver value for our customers. It's a go-to-market model that makes sense in the current environment and will work well into the future," said Patricia Russo, president and CEO of Lucent. "We're putting the full extent of Lucent's strength behind this effort, starting with the experience of our world-class sales and development teams."

"With Lucent and Sun working together, customers have access to market-leading technology and solutions to enable enhanced services to consumers and enterprises," said Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO, Sun. "Together we want to provide customers the maximum return on their IT investments while helping to drive complexity out of managing and deploying network infrastructures."

Lucent products, combined with Sun's network computing platform and services, including scalable, open standards-based systems and storage, the SolarisTM 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE), and the SunTM Open Network Environment (Sun ONE) for the development and delivery of JavaTM Web services, create a highly reliable end-to-end service delivery solution. Carriers offering these solutions are able to provide enhanced services to their enterprise customers, driving consumption and traffic and creating demand on their networks, ultimately increasing revenues.

Many industry-leading products from Lucent including the Flexent Mobility Server (FMS) products, the Navis suite of multi-vendor Network Management Systems, including VitalNet and VitalQIP are based on Sun technologies, making collaboration simple and efficient and providing opportunities for joint customer initiatives. FMS uses NetraTM cPCI servers and NetraTM High Availability suite, running on the robust Solaris 9 OE. Navis and Vitalnet/VitalQIP use the full Sun EnterpriseTM server line from the Sun FireTM v120 server to Sun FireTM 15K server.

Several of the areas of focus include: messaging which revolves around Lucent's AnyPath Unified Communication platform, leveraging the SunTM ONE Portal Server (formerly iPlanetTM Portal Server) and the Sun ONE Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack; business continuity featuring the OptiStar EdgeSwitch; the extended enterprise mobile offer which will provide high speed wireless data solutions for enterprise customers; and PacketIN Application Hosting Environment to provide converged voice, data and IP services.
