State of New Jersey Deploys Sun ONE to "Empower the People"
Decreases Operating Costs and Improves User Experience

The State of New Jersey has chosen the SunTM ONE Portal Server (formerly iPlanetTM Portal Server) for its e-government initiative. The "My New Jersey" portal targets four broad user communities -- citizens, government officials, business owners and employees -- and allows the state to deliver pertinent information and services while decreasing operating costs by more than $200,000 a year and improving end-user experience.

"Our single portal deployment enables us to identify a user once and provide the services that a user needs today, tomorrow or anytime down the road," said Judith Teller, CIO, the State of New Jersey. "For example, a citizen that requires government-to-citizen (G2C) services and later becomes a business owner will then require government-to-business (G2B) services. We don't need to register that person for two different portals; we are able to register a user once and deliver all services seamlessly and securely."

The State of New Jersey wanted to develop a strategy to deliver information and services to an array of user communities ranging from the casual browser of government services to remote employees and business owners requiring secure, reliable access to applications, data and services. The Sun ONE Portal Server met all of New Jersey's stated requirements: support for multiple types of users (employees, partners, and citizens at large) from a single platform, personalization for community building, the ability to manage individual and group content access based on pre-determined policies and roles, and the ability to vary security requirements.

The portal's policy-based access control is vital as the State must manage access to specific content, services, and applications for different groups or individuals. In addition, the Sun ONE Portal Server: Secure Remote Access Pack patented VPN (virtual private network) on demand technology allows government officials and business owners to securely access back office applications from any location with a Web browser; no client software is required.

Rather than manage multiple portal projects that may later need to be combined using expensive consulting services that will duplicate effort and infrastructure, the Sun ONE Portal Server empowers and enables IT administrators to learn and manage one platform. Ultimately, this results in a reduction in cost of doing business and time to market while maintaining the flexibility to add or remove new applications and services as business needs evolve.
