General Electric has deployed end-to-end technology from Sun to lower operating costs while securely delivering personalized content to more than 250,000 employees, contractors and consultants worldwide. The InsideGE.com employee portal enables users to customize their portals to deliver the most important and relevant information to them.

"Response from GE employees has been very positive," said Gary Reiner, CIO of General Electric. "They appreciate receiving relevant content through InsideGE.com such as communications from senior executives, information specific to one's business unit, and access to various applications. In addition, we've noticed a significant reduction in operating costs, while simultaneously improving communication, collaboration, and resource access among our staff."

"GE's global portal deployment validates our vision of an open, secure, identity-enabled network to provide services to users wherever they may be -- based on who they are," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of software for Sun Microsystems. "With this foundation in place, GE can now realize a better return on their technology investment by providing single sign-on capabilities to business logic."

"InsideGE.com" has lowered GE's operating costs significantly and improved security while empowering individual business units. IT administration does not require the skill set or time previously required to maintain the previously silo'd Websites, and the Web team is now centralized. Moreover, access is now role-based rather than URL-based, so business units enjoy tremendous flexibility to create their own portal channels or "portlets."

General Electric's portal architecture is a full Sun solution that includes the SunTM ONE Directory Server (formerly iPlanetTM Directory Server), SunTM ONE Application Server (formerly iPlanetTM Application Server), SunTM ONE Web Server (formerly iPlanetTM Web Server), and Sun servers. These systems are geographically dispersed to provide high availability and quick response. The solution was delivered on time and quality assured in conjunction with Sun Professional ServicesSM program in approximately six weeks.

The SunTM ONE Portal Server (formerly iPlanetTM Portal Server) has been ranked both number one in portal marketshare by The Radicati Group and positioned in the leader quadrant in Gartner's Portal Product Magic Quadrant for two consecutive years -- 2001 and 2002. The Sun ONE Portal Server is the industry's first portal platform for building business-to-employee, business-to-business and business-to-consumer portals, and enables the personalized delivery of content, services, business processes and applications for enterprises competing in today's competitive environment. The Sun ONE Portal Server is part of the SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) offering -- an open, integratable product portfolio to enable the development and delivery of JavaTM technology-based Web Services.
