Solaris WBEM Services
An Implementation of WBEM/CIM Standards
September 3, 2002,
Volume 55, Issue 1

SolarisTM Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) Services and the SunTM WBEM Software Development Kit (SDK) are the implementation from Sun of the emerging WBEM standards for the SolarisTM Operating Environment (Solaris OE).

The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) industry group has developed the WBEM model, a new standard that unifies the management of enterprise environments with a set of management- and Internet-standard technologies. Through WBEM, vendors can develop and deliver a set of standards-based management tools that leverage new technologies, such as the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and the Common Information Model (CIM), operating over HTTP.

As an active participant in both the DMTF and the WBEM initiative, Sun has developed Solaris WBEM Services software -- an implementation of the WBEM/CIM standards and a core technology of the Solaris 8 OE. In addition, Sun also offers the Sun WBEM SDK, a set of key application development tools. Integrated with JavaTM technology-based services, the Sun WBEM SDK makes it easier for software developers to create applications based on the CIM schema and XML/HTTP communication standards.

Solaris WBEM Services is a core element of the Solaris 8 OE that makes it manageable by tools from other enterprise vendors. It is based on an extensible schema and open Internet standards. With the Sun WBEM, Sun delivers a comprehensive set of Java technology tools and services for the development of management applications and instrumentation to manage Solaris OE software as well as other platforms.

Solaris WBEM Services Offerings

  • CIM Object Manager (CIMOM) -- a reference Java technology implementation of the CIM repository and object manager. It supports the XML/CIM interface and CIM operations over HTTP and RMI. The CIMOM handles all CIM operations, authentication, authorization, retrieval and storage of schema information from the CIM repository, and requests routing with the relevant providers.

  • Managed Object Format (MOF) compiler -- parses MOF statements in an ASCII text (or XML or JavadocTM) file and adds compiled classes and instances to the CIM repository.

  • Solaris OE software schema -- This extension of the common model specifically describes the Solaris OE and is a comprehensive object model of managed objects on the Solaris OE. It is the basis for implementing a collection of JavaTM Foundation Classes in providers.

  • Solaris OE software providers -- Solaris OE software providers are programs that communicate information between the Solaris OE and the CIMOM. They are implemented as Java Foundation Classes (or C components) and provide "dynamic" data.

The open source version of Solaris WBEM Services 2.5 contains the source code for the platform independent components of Solaris WBEM Services 2.5 such as the CIM Object Manager, the Repository, client and provider APIs, tools and the SDK complete with documentation and example programs.
