Sun donated ten million dollars (U.S.) worth of StarOfficeTM 6.0 Office Suite (branded StarSuiteTM 6.0 in Asian markets) -- a SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) Software Offering to the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Taiwan. StarOffice 6.0 will become the office suite of choice for more than 200 universities and 3900 K-12 schools throughout Taiwan. This donation represents Sun Microsystems and the Ministry of Education's commitment to the development of the local software industry and to help more than 5.3 million students succeed in an increasingly competitive world.

"This high value, no-cost license of software donation will positively impact over 5.3 million students and save heavily on purchasing costs for these academic institutions throughout Taiwan. More importantly, it will help students, teachers and administrators work more efficiently" said Daniel Yu, President of Global Sales Operations, Sun Microsystems Greater China. "Sun is committed to working with the Ministry of Education and schools throughout Taiwan to help develop a dynamic, competitive software industry in Taiwan."

"Sun Microsystems's donation of StarOffice 6.0 software to Taiwan's institutions underscores Sun's commitment to advancing technology in the Taiwan education system. This cost-effective solution helps cash strapped academic institutions deliver productive and creative tools to advance student learning, while keeping critical budget dollars focused on the students. This donation corresponds to the MOE's objective of enhancing the quality of the IT educational environment in Taiwan and cultivating IT talent through education," said Minister of Education Huang Jong-tsun.

The donation provides an unlimited number of user licenses at no cost of the StarOffice open-source software package that works on cross platforms, including Linux, SolarisTM Operating Environment (Solaris OE) and Windows operating systems for use throughout Taiwan education. In the last two months Sun has made StarOffice software donations to education authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong.

StarOffice 6.0 software offers a full-featured, multi-platform office suite with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, Web-publishing, charting, formula-editing and database applications that offer everyone from large corporations and national governments to small home offices and individuals a cost effective alternative to proprietary office suites. StarOffice is available in a number of regional languages, including Chinese (traditional and simplified), Japanese (kanji) and Korean. [...read more...]
