According to the 2Q02 Worldwide Server Database by Gartner Dataquest,
Sun increased its revenue position with marketshare growth of 10.75
percent year-over-year and now holds second place with 18.44 percent
marketshare. Furthermore, with just under 80,000 units shipped and
$1.86 billion in revenue, Sun maintains a commanding lead as the number
one vendor in the UNIX market worldwide.
Sun is introducing three new programs to meet mutual customers' requirements
for designing, implementing and managing mySAP.com e-business platform
solutions on the Sun platform. These programs include the SAP
Infrastructure Solution Center; a best practices reference program
developed using Sun Sigma initiative methodology; and QUEST, Sun's
sizing skills certification process.

Sun donated ten million dollars (U.S.) worth of StarOffice 6.0
Office Suite (branded StarSuite 6.0 in Asian markets) -- a Sun

Education (MOE) in Taiwan. StarOffice 6.0 will become the office suite
of choice for more than 200 universities and 3900 K-12 schools
throughout Taiwan.
Sun and Sprint will deliver the first nationwide convergence of
Internet services, wireless data and voice to consumers and business
people. The Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), Java
technology and Sun servers will provide valuable infrastructure and
service delivery technology for Sprint's PCS Vision, Sprint's Third
Generation (3G) wireless products and services, and the upgraded 3G 1X
wireless network.
Sun and PeopleSoft are taking their global strategic alliance a step
further with the integration of Sun ONE Identity Server 6.0
(formerly iPlanet Directory Server: Access Management Edition)
with PeopleSoft 8 Human Capital Management. This integration will
enable customers to build and deploy an open and secure end-to-end
federated identity management system controlled through a single
sign-on.
Netscape 7.0 Beta for the Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris
OE) is a browser that seamlessly integrates a wide variety of features
for surfing the Web, communicating with colleagues, participating in
discussion groups and creating dynamic Web pages. Netscape 7.0 Beta
gives users fast and efficient browsing, integrated mail and instant
messaging enhancements, faster and streamlined searches, more secured
privacy and enterprise functionality in one powerful cross-platform
application suite.
The Configuration and Service Tracker (CST) from Sun is a lightweight
(low system impact) Web-enabled application that provides a continuous
track of
the monitored system's state and configuration changes over the
lifetime of the system.
The Configuration and Service Tracker has been tested in a
mission-critical data center environment.
The Sun ONE Certificate Server (formerly iPlanet
Certificate Management System) software provides security and
authentication for Web-based applications that link employees,
customers and partners. The Sun ONE Certificate Server 4.7 uses
Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) security technology. New features include
support for FIPS 140-1 Level 3 Hardware and for Microsoft Windows
2000 Smartcard authentication.
Frank Sommers provides a
comprehensive overview of Jini network technology and its place in
the developer community. According to Sommers, while XML-based Web
Services allow federating information, and while the current use of
Jini network technology goes a long way towards federating computation
resources, the full potential of the Jini technology vision goes a step beyond
that and allows for the federation of computations.
The Sun ONE Portal Server: Instant Collaboration Pack 3.0.1
(formerly iPlanet Portal Server: Instant Collaboration Pack) brings
instant messaging capabilities to the enterprise while addressing
issues of security, reliability and directory integration. The Sun ONE
Portal Server: Instant Collaboration Pack 3.0.1 brings chat, alerts,
news, polls and file-sharing capabilities to the Sun ONE Portal Server
environment, enabling portal users to communicate instantly and
securely. This new release contains moderated chat capabilities,
emoticons and enhanced security features.
Sun ONE Message Queue 3.0 (formerly iPlanet Message
Queue for Java) is an implementation of the Java Message
Service (J.M.S. API) specification, a standardized API for handling
asynchronous messaging between Java applications. The software
is a message-oriented-middleware (MOM) product that is
designed to link applications, including legacy, enterprise
resource planning (ERP), and new applications, across an
enterprise.
The Sun System Handbook provides a list of system components such as
Boot PROMs, cables, Fibre Channel, graphics, monitors, printers and
removable media. This article focuses on SCSI, a standard for connecting
peripherals to your computer via a standard hardware interface.
The field-installable UltraSPARC III Cu 900 MHz microprocessor-based
MaxCPU Xoption board has been superseded by a new Configure-To-Order
(CTO) version of that board. This CTO MaxCPU board works in the Sun
Fire 15K servers and the Sun Fire 12K servers and is completely
identical to the Xoption version except that it will allow Sun to
proactively track installations and implement future enhancements to a
customer's Sun Fire 12K server or Sun Fire 15K server more quickly.
The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) Cluster Interconnect is now
available as an x-option on Sun Fire 4800 servers and Sun Fire
6800 servers. SCI Cluster Interconnect is used in conjunction with Sun
Cluster 3.0 software and provides higher data transfer rates and lower
latency than Gigabit Ethernet.

Users who are looking for a 64-bit UNIX workstation at the customary
price for a Wintel-based 32-bit PC branded workstation can find it in
the Sun Blade 150 workstation. The Sun Blade 150 workstation is
well suited to needs in software development, 2-D content creation,
EDA, finance, research and development, telecommunications, embedded
systems and MCAD/MCAE.
The Sun Blade 2000 workstation 900 MHz configurations will
transition to new configurations with new differentiated DIMMs
installed. The new differentiated DIMMs will have the same performance
and functionality as previous DIMMs, but they are no longer compatible
with Sun enterprise servers. Some minor changes were made (server
required capacitors were removed) to remove dependency from server
memory.
The Sun Blade 2000 workstation is now available in a standard 1.05 GHz
configuration offering faster performance than 900 MHz systems.
Customers with older Sun Blade 1000 workstations and Sun Blade 2000
workstations can now upgrade to the faster processor by purchasing the
1.05 GHz CPU module upgrade. One of the newly announced configurations
includes the new Sun XVR-500 graphics card, previously only
available as an x-option and an ATO option.
The Sun Fire V480 server can now be set up to run in a SunPlex
environment. SunPlex systems, using Sun Cluster 3.0 software,
tightly couple resources to help increase service levels while
decreasing service-level cost and risk. SunPlex environments are
ideally suited for any enterprise in which the availability and
scalability of applications and information services are critical.
The new high end Netra 20 AC server configuration includes two
900 MHz UltraSPARC III processors, 4 GB
of memory and two 73 GB disk drives for double the storage capacity of
any existing Netra 20 server standard or fixed configuration.
The new Sun Fire V100 server is the next generation entry-level,
uni-processor, rack-optimized server. The primary enhancement is the
use of the UltraSPARC IIi 64-bit processor instead of the UltraSPARC
IIe processor found on the original Sun Fire V100 server. As a result,
the new server now comes with 512 KB on chip Level 2 cache, up from
256 KB and either 550 MHz or 650 MHz processor speeds, up from 500 MHz.
Sun's new open storage-area network (SAN)
management software allows you to centralize the management of storage
resources, reducing complexity and total cost
of ownership (TCO), while improving
service-level availability through integration of SAN topology reporting,
device configuration and health monitoring.
New software and hardware options are available for the Sun
StorEdge 9900 series of high-end data center storage systems. The
following software enhancements are now available: Sun StorEdge
9900 ShadowImage Extension -- Logical Volume Divider (LVD) for Sun
StorEdge 9980, 9970, 9960, and 9910 systems, Sun StorEdge 9900
Priority Access software and more.
Oracle's Hardware Assisted Resilient Data (HARD) Initiative is a
comprehensive program designed to prevent data corruptions before they
happen by tightly integrating with advanced storage devices to create a
data corruption immune system that detects and eliminates corruptions.
Sun StorEdge 9900 DB Validator embeds Oracle's data validation and
checking algorithms within the Sun StorEdge 9970 and 9980 storage
systems.
Sun is repricing the Sun StorEdge 9980 and 9970 systems. Customers
looking to lower their total cost of ownership can consolidate storage
in the data center that is attached to multiple hosts with disparate
operating systems. The repricing should be particularly appealing to
users in Telco, Financial Services, Healthcare and Government.
The Sun StorEdge SDLT220 tape drive is the follow-on product to the
Sun StorEdge DLT8000
Flexipack. With a native capacity of 110 GB and a native throughput of
11 MB/second, it holds nearly three times the data and is nearly twice
as fast as the earlier drive. Sun StorEdge SDLT220 media (110 GB per cartridge) is
also being introduced at this time, which customers must use in order
to realize the capacity and performance of the new drive.
Sun is transitioning the Sun StorEdge L20/40/60 tape libraries, the
Sun StorEdge L9 DLT1 Autoloader and the Sun StorEdge DDS-3
Autoloader from its price list. The Sun StorEdge L25 and L100
modular tape libraries, which were announced on August 6, 2002, will be
the replacements for the Sun StorEdge L20/40/60.
For contractual reasons, Sun is transitioning the Sun StorEdge 9960
and 9910 systems and the Sun StorEdge 9960 fixed configurations for
the Sun Fire
15K server from its price list. To continue to provide investment
protection to Sun StorEdge 9960 and 9910 systems customers, new
components to expand and grow the customer's investment in those
systems will be available through June 27, 2003. Remanufactured
components, carrying a "same as new" Sun warranty, will be available
until June 30, 2005 (and beyond as product availability allows).
In its largest High Performance Computing (HPC) deal to date, Sun has
sold a 2 teraflops cluster of high-end servers to the
Cambridge-Cranfield HPC Facility. The University of Cambridge and
Cranfield University have together ponied up $40m to acquire the
system, which is scheduled to be operational in September. With this
deal, Sun advances to membership in the multiple-teraflops vendor
club.
Sun Educational Services is offering several new courses for system
administrators, including What's New in Solaris 9 Operating
Environment (Solaris OE), What's New in Solaris 9 OE Network Administration and
Sun ONE Directory Server (formerly iPlanet Directory Server)

(CLDC) that the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) uses.
The high-performance Xalan XSLT Compiler (XSLTC) is now included in the
latest version of the Java Web Services Developer Pack (Java WSDP),
the free all-in-one download package containing key technologies to
simplify building of Web Services using the Java 2 Platform. XSLTC
can help you add high-performance, high-volume, portable, embeddable
XML transformation capabilities to your applications.
The
latest maintenance release of version 1.4 of the Java 2 Platform,
Standard Edition (J2SE) is available for download, with over 2000
bugs fixed and
with upgrades to tools like Java Web
Start software, the Java
Update mechanism for the Java Plug-in software, new garbage
collection options

The Secured Web Solution is a bundle offering of the Sun Crypto
Accelerator 1000 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption card installed in
the Sun Fire 280R server. Customers will need to install the Sun
Crypto Accelerator 1000 software, which is shipped in the same box as
the Sun Fire 280R server.
The Trusted Solaris 8 AnswerBook software collection of
documentation includes many resources such as an administration
