Sun's Entry-level Server Sets New Benchmark
For a Four-way System

Sun set another world record on the ECperf software benchmark for a four-way system with a maximum configuration of four CPUs. The configuration consisted of three Sun Fire V480 servers with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III processors running the Oracle 9i Application Server Release 2. It achieved 36,122 Benchmark Business Operations (BBops)/min@Std with a price performance of $12/BBops/min@Std.

Introduction to Interprocess Communication Using Named Pipes

The Solaris Developer Connection program Web site recently had a technical article titled "Introduction to Interprocess Communication Using Named Pipes" by Faisal Faruqui. Named pipes allow two unrelated processes to communicate with each other. They are also known as FIFOs (first-in, first-out) and can be used to establish a one-way (half-duplex) flow of data. Faruqui defines and explains the benefits of named pipes and provides code samples of half-duplex and of a full-duplex communication.
