Sun Delivers First Liberty-enabled Single Sign-on Solution
Sun ONE Identity Server 6, Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2

Sun is shipping the first end-to-end network identity solution that addresses customers' needs for heightened security, privacy and federated identity management that is fully compliant with the recently announced Liberty Alliance version 1.0 specification.

"Identity is the most fundamental Web service and customers want open, interoperable solutions that enable frictionless commerce on the Web," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president, software, Sun. "CIOs and commerce sites are spending millions on redundant, proprietary identity infrastructure. By offering early support of the Liberty spec, Sun is giving enterprises more choice in network identity and enabling them to take advantage of the rising tide of business opportunities. With Sun's solutions, customers can reduce redundancies between existing systems while extending their network identity environment safely to deliver single sign-on today within their own organizations or among groups of companies working together in a circle of trust."

The SunTM ONE Platform for Network Identity features pre-integrated software, hardware and services. It has been completely updated with the Liberty-enabled SunTM ONE Identity Server 6 (formerly iPlanetTM Identity Server: Access Management Edition), SunTM ONE Directory Server (formerly iPlanetTM Directory Server) 5.2, SolarisTM 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) and new professional services offerings. Other products in the SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) software portfolio will be Liberty-enabled over time, beginning with the award-winning SunTM ONE Portal Server (formerly iPlanetTM Portal Server).

The Sun ONE Platform for Network Identity includes:

  • Sun ONE Identity Server 6: This new version enables enterprises to bridge disparate authentication systems with single sign-on. Based on open standards, including Liberty, SAML and JavaTM Authentication and Authorization Service, customers can integrate the Sun ONE platform into existing systems without lock-in to a single vendor. Sun ONE Identity Server includes increased authentication, policy administration and security controls, such as Kerberos v5, Microsoft NT and Windows 2000 authentication plug-ins, automatic resource-based authentication and OSCP for digital certificates. The product also supports the leading application servers for development and integration, including the SunTM ONE Application Server (formerly iPlanetTM Application Server) as well as third-party products such as the BEA Web Logic Server, SAP Web Application Server, IBM WebSphere and others. The product is available in early access (EA) and is expected to be released in October of this year. To register for the EA program, go to:

  • Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2: Sun ONE Directory Server now features password synchronization with Microsoft Active Directory and added scalability and performance through 64-bit addressing. The product will also offer increased availability in mission-critical applications through SunTM Cluster 3.0 software agent support and four-way multi-master replication over WAN for global deployments. The Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2 is expected to be available in November.

  • Services: Two new services for network identity are now available, including the Security Hardening Service that utilizes the Solaris OE controls for identification, authentication and access control and the Security Assessment Service for Firewall DMZ to help establish a strong perimeter defense. Additional learning, consulting and support programs for network identity are also available.
