The docs.sun.com Web site has been enhanced. Version 3.0 looks like the
old version but it is a completely new system. The site is now written
entirely in the Java programming language, implemented on top of
Oracle software and runs under the Sun ONE Web Server.
A collection of video modules is available, covering what's new with
the Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) in areas such as
Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) Integration, data management,
availability, performance and compatibility. The videos feature
Andy Ingram, vice president, Solaris Software Marketing;
Graham Lovell, Product Marketing Director, Solaris OE and others.
Established in 1990, Sun Microsystems Laboratories is the applied
research and advanced development arm of Sun. The
Sun Labs successfully straddles the world of research excellence and
the world of business economics. Sun Labs has a well-known and
well-developed track record when it comes to product innovation. Equal,
if not so well known, is the emphasis in the Labs on process and tool
innovation.
The Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) architecture and the Sun ONE
Application Services Reference Architecture address key elements of
success in the new business environment brought about by the World Wide
Web. Deploying Web Services based on the Sun ONE architecture
simplifies interaction between multiple data sources and allows access
to information and capabilities previously too complex or cumbersome to
integrate effectively.
Project JXTA is an open source project that defines a set of protocols
for ad hoc, pervasive, peer-to-peer (P2P) computing. The virtual
network uses five abstractions that portray existing computer
networks. These include Project JXTA ID, Peer Groups, Advertisements,
Resolvers (Universal Resource Binding and Rendezvous) and Pipes.
The Administration and User Guide to the Sun Grid Engine,
Enterprise Edition 5.3 software is a 332-page PDF that defines grid
computing, the components of Sun Grid Engine, Enterprise Edition 5.3
software, installation, submitting jobs and utilization policies.
Topics include checkpointing, monitoring and controlling jobs.
The Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) delivers built-in
compatibility with the Linux operating system, which is built on the
open standards and nonproprietary interfaces consistent with Sun's
computing vision. The Solaris 9 OE includes a comprehensive set of
Linux applications (freeware) and other freely available software,
providing interoperability and commonality across both environments.
Sun Cluster 3.0 5/02 software offers support for Solaris 9
Operating Environment (Solaris OE) as well as Solaris 8 OE, security
hardening on Sun Cluster 3.0 software supported agents, faster
application messaging via Remote Shared Memory (RSM) and enhanced
manageability, agent development and quality.
The Sun Code Camp program for Solaris Operating Environment
(Solaris OE) software developers provide an intensive, technically
stimulating, engineer-to-engineer learning experience. The sessions
focus on immediate outcomes and provide developers with programming
information and sample code that can be used right away. New sessions cover
GNOME and Solaris 8 OE IPv6/IPSEC and more.
Along with its comprehensive offerings for developer training on
Java and Jini technology and its certification programs, Sun
Educational Services is making a special limited-time discount program
available to members of the Sun Developer Connection program.
There is a 15-page white paper available titled "A Benchmark Comparison
of the Sun ONE Application Server (formerly iPlanet Application
Server) Integrated Message Queue and the IBM WebSphere Java Message
Service [J.M.S. API] Provider" from the Crimson Consulting Group. The paper
defines real-world scenarios in which messaging may be used and
provides a detailed performance comparison between two J.M.S. API
implementations: The Sun ONE Message Queue (formerly iPlanet
Message Queue for Java) and the IBM MQSeries products.
The Sun Global Application Developer Corner is a collection of
information and resources to help developers globalize their
applications. A PDF available from the Web site is titled "Solaris
9 Operating Environment Globalization White Paper."
Multiple developers perform many different roles in developing Web
Services. Often each developer is working in a different environment
with different tools, with little commonality across these
environments. The Sun ONE Developer Platform, reference
architectures and Sun's Enterprise Services Portfolio combine a
comprehensive set of tools with key backend deployment software,
allowing developers to deliver Web Services faster.
The conference "E-Services in Higher Education, the Portal Symposium

Seeking to develop key technological initiatives and directions in the
field of higher education, Sun works with educational solution vendors
and the higher education community to explore issues. A founding member
of the Java in Administration Special Interest Group (JA-SIG), Sun also
participates in and works with key administrative computing
organizations worldwide, including ISTEC, EUNIS, Educause, UCISA, CNI
and Internet 2.
Sun Educational Services offers two administrator certification
programs for the Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE) -- one
for system administrators and one for network administrators.
Training classes on the Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE)
available through the Solaris Developer Connection program are
numerous and varied, including everything from instructor-led offerings
to practice certification exams.
The newly released second edition of "Learning the Korn Shell" by Bill
Rosenblatt and Arnold Robbins covers all the new features of ksh93 --
Korn shell's latest version -- making it one of the most up-to-date
references now available.
"Ant: The Definitive Guide," Complete Build Management for Java
technology by Eric M. Burke and Jesse E. Tilly covers Ant, the premier
build-management tool for Java technology environments. Chapters in the
book cover installation and configuration, the buildfile, Ant
datatypes, user-written tasks, user-written listeners and the future of
Ant.
"The Essential Guide to XML Technologies" by Ron Turner gives
non-technical professionals a business-focused, hype-free XML briefing.
Discover what XML is, how it works, what problems it solves and exactly
how to use it for competitive advantage. It includes case studies from
key industries; current XML application coverage; practical
walkthroughs of XML markup; and a preview of tomorrow's most exciting
XML technologies.
The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, (J2SE) version 1.4.1 beta
is now
available for the Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE),
Windows and Linux. Early Access 64-bit releases for Itanium processors
are available for both Linux and Windows.
Atempo has released Time Navigator for Oracle on NetApp, a serverless
backup and restore solution that provides online backup and restore of
Oracle databases running on Network Appliance filers. The solution
allows online backup with no impact on the database server, an
essential requirement for today's enterprise environments. This unique
feature allows rapid detection and restoration of the corrupted or
damaged parts of the Oracle database such as tablespaces, data files,
log files or control files, without having to restore the entire
database.
Cape Clear Software has added support for Java Message Service
(J.M.S. API) and IBM MQSeries to its CapeConnect Web Services-based
integration platform. Organizations can now integrate their
messaging-based applications with Web Services and, more crucially,
deploy Web Services across J.M.S. API or MQSeries. Along with the integration
of J.M.S. API and MQSeries applications, CapeConnect now supports transmission
of SOAP messages over these messaging systems, in addition to
the company's existing support for transports such as HTTP, HTTPS and
SMTP.
Axeda Access application, release 1.5, a component of the Axeda Device
Relationship Management System, provides secure, Internet-based remote
desktop sharing between service and support specialists and remote
computers installed at customer sites. Axeda Access enables in-house
technical support experts or field service engineers to analyze
conditions, make repairs, update and administer software or assist
with user operations on remote systems installed at customer sites.
