"Exploring Web Services"
Sun Journal Column by John Gage
In a recent Sun Journal column, "Exploring Web Services," John Gage
makes a distinction between high performance computing (HPC) and Web
Services, noting that the academic community has typically led the

that HPC and Web Services have much in common, given that both depend
on distributed computing.
Charles Brown on Straight Through Processing
Three Approaches to Scrubbing Reference Data
In his article on straight-through processing (STP), Charles Brown
identifies flawed reference data as the chief impediment. To ensure
consistently high levels of quality in reference data, companies can
either impose enterprise-wide standards, or they can take a more
distributed approach, delegating responsibility for data integrity to
its owners within the enterprise. A third approach is to turn to an
outsourcing partner who will share costly and laborious functions.

Java Technology and Wireless Automotive Diagnostic Tools
Cell Phones Communicate Real-Time Data to Web Browsers
The OBD2 Scan Tool developed by Visual Training Technologies Inc.
(VTTi) combines wireless and Java technologies to collect
automotive diagnostic information and report it to a Web browser and a
mobile phone display. A Java technology-based midlet (MIDP), which resides
in the memory of Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition
(J2ME)-compliant cell phone, can simulate a working instrument
cluster, display diagnostic codes and present information that helps
technicians troubleshoot an electrical fault. The cell phone
communicates with the automobile or truck through the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD) connector.
