Solaris 9 Operating Environment
Only OS Integrated with Standard Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition

The Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) redefines the operating system as the only services platform integrated with a standard Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application server and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory server, providing the foundation for identity management. The integration of Solaris Volume Manager and Solaris 9 Resource Manager software reduces both cost and deployment time. Solaris 9 OE also comes fully integrated with the Sun ONE Directory Server (formerly the iPlanet Directory Server) and the Sun ONE Application Server (formerly the iPlanet Application Server).

The new Sun Customer Ready systems (CRS) program provides customers with the ability to buy Sun factory integrated products with custom options and services. The Sun CRS program combines Sun and complementary third party hardware and software products into complete solutions. Configurations are built to the customer's order in Sun factories and shipped as complete systems ready to deploy.

    Sun Success Story

    Bank of America (Asia) has launched Hong Kong's first wireless banking service. Customers can use their WAP-enabled mobile telephones and PDAs for a wide variety of information and transaction services allowing anywhere, anytime access for inquiries about account balances, portfolio status or transaction results as well as transfer funds, buy or sell currencies, pay bills and trade securities. This service is built on a foundation of servers from Sun, along with the Toronto-based 724 Solutions Inc., Mobile Financial Services Platform and Xgate from Singapore-based EdgeMatrix Pte Ltd.

    The employee portal that Sun and Workscape designed for General Motors Corp. has received the Digital Consulting, Inc. (DCI) 2002 Best Internal Corporate Portal Award. The portal is called mySocrates, and it is one of the world's largest employee portals, serving more than 190,000 U.S. hourly and salaried employees. mySocrates was developed from Workscape's Employee.com product and deployed with the Sun ONE Portal Server (formerly iPlanet Portal Server).

    Sun has signed an agreement with Intraware Inc., a provider of global electronic software delivery and management (ESDM) solutions, to continue utilizing the Intraware SubscribeNet ESDM solution to deliver software updates to its global Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) customers and to fulfill initial orders of Sun software for select customers. Under the new agreement, Sun will have the option to use SubscribeNet to deliver additional lines of Sun ONE software products such as Forte Tools, StarOffice software and Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE).

    Galileo's GlobalFares Airfare-pricing System
    Migrating to Sun Platform Reduces TCO

    Galileo International has selected Sun as the processor solution provider for the company's newly revamped GlobalFares airfare-pricing system. Replacing part of its mainframe systems with Sun Fire 6800 servers and the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) has helped Galileo reduce its total cost of ownership by 30 percent and is expected to save the company tens of millions of dollars in hardware maintenance and programming costs.

    Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) has over 300 new features, including enhanced manageability, security, availability and scalability features. Sun is integrating significant elements of middleware, including its next generation Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) 1.3 compliant Sun ONE Application Server 7, Platform Edition, and the foundation for identity management, the Sun ONE Directory Server (formerly known as the iPlanet Directory Server).

    Supports XML-based File Formats

    StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite and StarSuite 6.0 Office Suite are two new Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) offerings that run on the Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE), Linux and Microsoft Windows. The software supports XML-based file formats for compatibility and flexibility while improving interoperability with the exchange of Microsoft Office files.

    New Performance Reporting Manager Add-on Software
    For Sun Management Center Software 3.0

    Sun Management Center software 3.0 now offers the Performance Reporting Manager add-on package which enables customers to generate reports and graphs on an enterprise level based on the data collected by Sun Management Center software. It helps with planning resources and identifying problems to lower TCO and respond quickly to changes in business. New part numbers will be introduced for the Enterprise Suite options. As a result, the old Enterprise Suite part numbers will be EOL'd.

    Repricing of Miscellaneous Solaris 8 OE Part Numbers
    New Solaris 8 OE Upgrade Right-to-Use Licenses

    Currently available Solaris 8 Operating Environment (Solaris OE) Upgrade licenses are being repriced to align them more closely with the Solaris 9 OE licensing and pricing structure. In addition, changes to the Free Solaris Binary License program will require the introduction of additional levels of the Right-to-Use upgrade licenses. To compensate for low demands, repricing of select media kits and documentation sets is also being announced.

    Sun Enterprise 10000 Server Bundled System

    Sun is offering aggressive price reductions for remanufactured Sun Fire products, as well as all remanufactured Sun Enterprise 10000 systems and Power Express board. The price reduction for Sun Enterprise 10000 server is also applicable to bundled systems with Sun StorEdge A3500 array.

    EOL: 360 MHz UltraSPARC II CPU for Sun Enterprise 220R Server and Ultra 60 Workstation
    EOL: Logoless Enterprise 220R Server Configurations

    Sun is transitioning the 360 MHz UltraSPARC II CPU for the Sun Enterprise 220R server and the Logoless Enterprise 220R server configurations. These are being replaced, respectively, by the UltraSPARC III processors and the Sun Fire 280R server. The last order date for both EOL'd products is August 23, 2002. Customers will receive a trade-in allowance toward the purchase of two processor configurations within the Sun Fire 280R server product family.

    New 36 GB HDD Configurations for the Sun StorEdge S1 Array
    Up to 109 GB of Storage Capacity

    New AC and DC powered 36 GB 10K rpm SCSI HDD configurations are now available for the Sun StorEdge S1 array. The new configurations offer up to 109 GB of storage capacity, via its three hot swap drive bays. All other functionalities remain the same.

    Lowering TCO

    May 14th, 2002 is the general availability date for Sun StorEdge Resource Management Suite 6.0 and Sun StorEdge Surveyor Resource Manager 6.0 software, as well as the EOL date for Sun StorEdge Resource Management Suite 5.0, Sun StorEdge Surveyor Storage Resource Manager 4.0.2 software and Sun HighGround Storage Resource Manager for Exchange Servers 4.0.3 licenses.

    New Standard Configurations: Sun StorEdge A1000 and D1000 Products
    Significantly Shorter Lead Times

    A realignment of standard configurations for the Sun StorEdge A1000 and Sun StorEdge D1000 products is now in effect. By changing the standard configurations to the most popular Sun StorEdge A/D1000 arrays, Sun can offer significantly shorter lead times for both end user customers and partner/resellers.

    EOL: Sun StorEdge SCSI Options
    Supported on the Sun Enterprise 250, 450, 220R, 420R and Sun Fire 280R Servers

    Sun Microsystems announces the End of Life of the Sun StorEdge SCSI RAID Controller options supported on the Sun Enterprise 250, 450, 220R, 420R and Sun Fire 280R servers. Last order date for the options included in this announcement is August 23, 2002. Sun will not offer a follow-on PCI based SCSI RAID Controller card because most Sun customers have already moved to hardware and software RAID configurations with external storage arrays such as the Sun StorEdge A1000 and T3 arrays.

    Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) capabilities have been extended in the Solaris 9 Operating Environment (Solaris OE). IPSec provides highly configurable protection at the IP layer. Because the protection occurs at the IP layer, all types of Internet traffic can be protected. There is a white paper available online that describes network threats and an overview of how IPSec can provide protection against these threats.
