Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition
Enables Rapid Development for Mobile Devices
April 8, 2002,
Volume 50, Issue 2

The new ForteTM for JavaTM 4, Mobile Edition Software is a compact IDE optimized for developers building applications targeting the JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM) for JavaTM technology-enabled mobile devices that can be deployed as Web services. It is optimized for MIDP/CLDC development and is based on the NetBeansTM Tools Platform.

Optimized for J2ME Platform MIDP/CLDC Development

The Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition Software includes wizards and templates that help define MIDlets and MIDlet suites. Code completion assistance is enabled with the J2ME platform packages and libraries to facilitate code development. Compilation is performed with an easy choice from the MIDlet contextual menu, and compilation and preverification are performed as a single step.

Other features include the capability for testing MIDlets from a menu selection as well as utilizing an integrated debugger to enable source code debugging.

"We are at the beginning of a mobile device demand curve driven by early adopter and nontechnical users, who continue to find an incredibly broad range of uses for these devices," said Peter Young, Vice President of Forte Tools. "With market demand well established, what's needed now are the right applications to meet the demand. An IDE that enables application developers to target Java technology-enabled mobile devices is a critical part of this equation, and Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition Software, provides this functionality."

Young also noted the investments that mobile services providers and device manufacturers are making to create new value-added services. "Java technology is seen as a valuable component in creating and delivering these new services because it is an open and standards-based technology," Young said.

Integrated with a J2ME Platform-Compliant Emulator

J2ME Wireless Toolkit Software is included as a default emulation environment. It is based on the MIDP and CLDC reference implementation, and it has been certified against the Java software compatibility test suite. Skins are also provided for several generic phone skins from Motorola i85s and the Blackberry GRPS handheld device. Palm OS development and source level debugging is also provided.

Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition Software includes a device emulator registry for mounting additional emulators. This feature enables developers to:

  • Mount multiple SDKs and emulators in parallel
  • Make multiple SDKs and emulators available to the IDE
  • Set a default device skin with each mounted emulator, so that each skin can be associated with a specific emulator (MIDP/CLDC implementation)
  • Perform rapid target emulator switching for test MIDlets

It also incorporates a standard Unified Emulator Interface (UIE) to integrate with emulators and SDKs. Developers can use the same development features within the Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition Software to create and test MIDlet code--regardless of the emulator type. With the UIE, developers have a wider choice of compatible, industry-leading emulators with which to develop services.

The new Forte for Java 4, Mobile Edition Software will be offered at no charge via download from the Sun Web site later this summer. An early access version of the Forte for Java 4 IDE is available for download now. The early access software includes the Mobile Edition, Community Edition, and Enterprise Edition software.
