Sony and Sun Offer Next Generation AV/IT Solutions

Sun and Sony Electronics are teaming up to offer integrated next generation AV/IT solutions, including video-on-demand and streaming media solutions, for cable companies (MSO's), telcos and broadcasters.

Sony's Systems Solutions Division (SSD) will serve as integrator for the projects, offering integration and connectivity with Sun's server, storage and software technologies.

"This agreement brings together a global leader in network-based computing solutions with a global leader in media technologies for the broadcast and cable industries," said Rob Hall, vice president, extreme sales, Sun Microsystems. "The goal is to deliver one of the most comprehensive set of solutions to the integrated media enterprise."

Sony designs and installs such custom solutions as central-casting facilities, integrated newsrooms and automated AV/IT network systems, including IP-casting. According to Pat Whittingham, SSD's senior vice president, offering extensive hands-on experience integrating not only Sony but also third-party technologies, SSD is skilled at creating the technical 'glue' that integrates diverse elements and applications within a system.

SSD also provides technical and business consultative services, project management and custom software development to enable new revenue streams, transition to digital broadband technologies and support infrastructure development. [...read more...]
