Sun's Enterprise Data Warehouse Reference Architecture
Sun and Sybase Develop the Largest Data Warehouse on Record

Sun's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) Reference Architecture, based on products from Sun and Sybase Inc., has recently developed the largest data warehouse on record. Audited by InfoSizing Inc., a consultancy specializing in benchmark verifications, this system achieved significant performance gains over traditional DBMS databases. And it managed large amounts of data efficiently, compressing input data to 30 to 80 percent of its original size. Compare that to traditional databases, which can explode data 3 to 10 times due to indexes, summaries and aggregates.

Systems built to the specifications of the Sun and Sybase Enterprise Data Warehouse Reference Architecture give customers next-generation business analysis capabilities that can help them make critical decisions more quickly and with better information--all while lowering their risk and total cost of ownership. Sun Reference Architectures are designed to simplify the complexity of large IT systems by providing pretested, preintegrated hardware and software components that ship to customers' sites ready to deploy, which can lead to an 80 percent reduction in installation and setup times. Reference Architecture diagrams, sizing and implementation guides and component lists are available to customers free of charge.

The tested configuration, built on SunTM servers and storage and running Sybase software, outperformed traditional DBMS databases with query speeds up to 1000 times faster, while using innovative indexing and compression technologies to reduce storage requirements by as much as 75 percent. The multimillion-dollar system was tested with:

  • Sun FireTM 4810 and 6800 Servers and Sun EnterpriseTM 4500 and 6000 Servers, comprising 12 nodes and totaling more than 160 UltraSPARCR II and III Processors

  • Sun StorEdgeTM 9960 Array with 92.7 TB of storage capacity

  • Sybase IQ Multiplex software loaded with more than 48 TB of raw input data

  • SolarisTM 8 Operating Environment (Solaris OE)

  • More than 1000 concurrent users and queries

Sun and Sybase data warehouses can deliver industry-leading capabilities to customers in the health care, financial services, telecommunications, media and retail markets. These include:

  • The ability to load input data in real time, without interrupting access to data or queries

  • Plenty of room to grow, with a maximum storage capacity of 92.7 TB and an estimated 94 percent utilization of additional processors and server nodes

  • Hot swap or add additional disks, server nodes or processors

  • High availability features, including node failover and disaster recovery capabilities

The Sun and Sybase data warehouse takes advantage of the best of today's technologies to realize significant gains in efficiency and performance. Its strengths include:

  • Column structure that maximizes CPU efficiency and RAM resources

  • RAID 5 support that keeps storage overhead to a minimum without sacrificing performance

  • Big disks that reduce cabinet sizes to conserve floor space and take advantage of economies of scale to lower the cost per terabyte of capacity

Currently, Sun Enterprise Data Warehouse Reference Architecture proof-of-concept systems can be seen in Menlo Park, California; Beijing, Singapore, and Seoul. Sun has plans to expand its EDW systems to 25 other centers around the world, beginning in May 2002 with centers in Paris and Tokyo. [...read more...]
