Sun and the U.S. Army Intelligence Center (USAIC) have created a unique
education program and re-enlistment incentive to provide soldiers trained
on Sun servers, workstations and storage systems with hands-on
experience at Sun's Northern California campuses.
The innovative industry-government program, called the Sun
Microsystems/Army System Administrator Fellows Internship Program, is
helping the U.S. Army retain military personnel with marketable
technology skills and ensuring that recruits are trained with an eye
toward innovations in network architectures and SolarisTM
Operating Environment (Solaris OE) platform-based technologies.
The Sun Microsystems/Army System Administrator Fellows Internship
Program includes three stages:
IT Training: Students complete course work at the USAIC in
administration of computer systems and software based on
Solaris OE.
Sun Internship: Outstanding systems administrators are invited to
pursue a six-month internship at Sun's Northern California offices.
Internships cover current and future system administration practices,
keeping recruits at the leading edge of information technology.
Student Teaching: Upon completion of the Sun internship, military
personnel are assigned to teach classes in UNIXR systems
administration and network engineering to other recruits at USAIC's
Fort Huachuca, Arizona facility.
Now entering its fourth year, the program has been host-managed by a
number of different organizations within Sun, giving recruits exposure
to network security, enterprise system administration and PC
interoperability experts. Army leaders agree that the program helps
them to stay at the leading edge of training, recruitment and
retention.
Every year, the USAIC trains approximately 320 new soldiers, sailors,
airmen and marines to maintain the Sun UNIX systems-based computer
networks used at military intelligence sites around the world. Under
the internship program, outstanding IT system administrators from the
USAIC are accepted by Sun to pursue internships at Sun facilities in
the San Francisco Bay Area. Each intern has solid base of technical
skills and training, which can include:
Configuring and troubleshooting SunTM Enterprise Servers and
Sun FireTM
Servers
Adding and replacing boards in an enterprise-class server using
Dynamic Reconfiguration
Configuring and troubleshooting Sun UltraTM Workstations and
Sun BladeTM
Workstations
Installing the Solaris OE
Executing UNIX commands and utilities
Configuring a Sun StorEdgeTM Array using VERITAS Volume Manager
and Sun StorEdgeTM RAID Manager software
Understanding of generic network principles and fundamentals
