Sun made two important announcements involving iPlanet and AOL. The
iPlanetTM Portal Server: Instant Collaboration Pack is the industry's
first portal environment that incorporates collaborative,
community-based instant messaging. Designed to meet the needs of both
service providers and enterprise customers, the solution provides the
extensive security, reliability, and directory integration required to
support instant messaging among internal employees and external
business partners, suppliers and consumers in a secure environment. In
addition, Sun and AOL have announced their plans to perform
interoperability testing between the iPlanet Portal Server: Instant
Collaboration Pack
and the AOL Instant Messenger.
"The iPlanet Portal Server allows users to access
SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) services on
demand, and offers customers a comprehensive range of content,
integration, and collaboration services," said Stuart Wells, Senior Vice
President of iPlanet Products at Sun Microsystems. "Until now,
enterprise instant messaging solutions could be used internally only.
Now our offering allows customers to extend secure instant
messaging services beyond their corporate borders to customers,
partners and suppliers."
The iPlanet Portal Server is part of Sun ONE. The
addition of the Instant Collaboration Pack and its extensive features,
including instant messaging, polling, chat rooms, alerts, and the
ability to create work groups and share files and URLs in a completely
secure environment, represents a natural extension of the portal
platform to deliver services on demand in real-time. The product
leverages the community management, single sign-on, and secure remote
access capabilities of the iPlanet Portal Server, enabling users to be
easily identified and authenticated. As a result, users will have
seamless access to securely instant message using the underlying "VPN
on demand" capability of the iPlanet Portal Server: Secure Remote
Access Pack for remote and mobile users.
Sun and AOL
Sun and AOL will perform interoperability testing between the iPlanet
Portal Server: Instant Collaboration Pack and AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM). This interoperability will ensure that the two instant messaging
products can access one another using a single messaging client. These
efforts will ultimately allow enterprise customers and service
providers to easily incorporate multi-client messaging offerings.
