The Sun Fire 15K Server is a new flagship high-end system built on
innovative technologies that increase the performance level,
reliability, scalability, and availability of high-end servers while
significantly helping to reduce total cost of ownership.
Sun has just joined the Liberty Alliance Project as a charter member to
create an open, federated solution for network identity--enabling
ubiquitous single sign-on across multiple web sites, and eventually
across multiple devices connected to the Internet.
Sun has acquired Critical Path's mainframe rehosting business. Sun will
hire many of the employees from Critical Path, acquire many of its
assets, and continue support for the currently installed base of
customers. Combined with the newly announced Sun Fire 15K server,
the Critical Path mainframe rehosting "middleware" will help companies
run their existing transaction processing and batch applications on
Sun's scalable, binary-compatible servers without rewriting their
mainframe CICS code.
The Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) Event Registration web site
features details on the upcoming Sun ONE event, "Making the Smart
Choice," to be held in London on October 17, 2001.
An online tracking application, the Configuration and Service Tracker
(CST) version 2.1, provides a continuous record of configuration
changes to a system. An application for Sun Management Center 3.0,
CST supports multi-domain Starfire platforms and the 64-bit
Solaris 7 and 8 Operating Environments (OE).
The Orcutt School District's primary mission is building a solid base
of life skills the students in its six elementary and two junior high
schools. Orcutt wanted to provide all students and faculty with a
comprehensive, uniform suite of applications. The solution arrived in the
form of a powerful and comprehensive set of productivity applications: the
StarOffice software suite from Sun.
One of the resources available on the Solaris Operating Environment
(OE) Security section of the Sun software web page concerns the
Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM). By using a PAM, users who need
access to certain network resources, or who log in from outside the
firewall, may utilize stronger authentication mechanisms, without modifying
applications or utilities. PAM also insulates application developers from
evolutionary improvements to authentication technologies, while simultaneously
allowing deployed applications to use those improvements.
Ford Financial is transforming its global enterprise-wide IT systems
into an e-business, services-driven network in collaboration with Sun.
Sun Professional Services will architect and build a platform to
replace the existing infrastructure with Java 2 Platform,
Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology.
The Sun Fire 15K (aka Starcat) Server offers customers a data
center architecture that is an alternative to the costly, complex
solutions from companies such as IBM. It features 106 processors,
mainframe-class robustness, and over 300 percent greater system
throughput than any competitive UNIX system now available.
Groundbreaking technology connects all the various system components
for maximum system flexibility and application performance.
The benchmark results of the new Sun Fire 15K Server on the
SPECjbb2000 (Java Business Benchmark) benchmark achieved results of
324,542 operations per second, 2.5 times faster than IBM's best
published results. The benchmark gives Java technology users an
objective and representative measurement of a system's ability to run
Java technology-based server applications.
The new Sun Fire 15K Server, in combination with Sun StorEdge T3
Arrays, has demonstrated world record performance with the two-tier
SAP-Standard Sales and Distribution (SD) Application benchmark. The
server and the arrays supported 4,100 SAP-SD benchmark users with an
average dialog response time of 1.88 seconds and 414,000 order line
items per hour.
The Sun Fire 15K Server outperformed a 1 GHz, 128-way IBM system by
over 23 percent on the large FL5L1 dataset using FLUENT, a
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software application. In this test,
the Sun Fire 15K Server demonstrated a 59x speedup on 72 CPUs, which
shows near-linear scalability.
There is now an extension to the Sun Enterprise 10000 Technology
Refresh Promotion. Get a new Sun Enterprise 10000 system at a
promotional price, with higher quality, reliability, performance, and
lower total cost of ownership.
The server page of the Sun web site contains rackmount guidelines. The
web site also has a quick list of do's and don'ts, as well as FAQs,
rack manufacturer part numbers, and sample configurations.
Forte for Java, release 3.0 provides a complete "entry to
enterprise" development capability. It is based on the NetBeans
open source IDE, architected to exploit its truly modular architecture,
and augmented with Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE)
support.
The Sun SupportForum web site provides free support via user
discussion forums, documentation, and downloads, as well as links to
valuable resources and tools such as the SunSolve knowledge
database. The Sun SupportForum also offers access to low-cost alternatives
such as Expert City and email-based support and links to other resources.
The Sun Embedded Solutions Connection web site is an invaluable
marketing resource portal with the tools you need to successfully
market your solutions, access technical expertise, and get ahead of the
competition. White papers and other information on embedded SPARC tool
solutions is available.
Dot-Com Builder's Claire Sponheim recently conducted an interview with
Steve Baker, program manager and Bill Tidd, director of engineering,
for GraphOn Corporation. GraphOn offers web-enabling products that
allow UNIX, Linux, and Windows applications to run via a browser from
any web device. The interview includes questions about the current
nature and future of web services, including its definition, the risks
of pioneering, and the three largest challenges involved in developing
web services.
The upcoming Solaris Developer Connection Program Chat Session is
"Techniques for Optimizing Applications: High Performance Computing"
October 18, 2001 at 12 noon, PDT, with authors Rajat P. Garg and Ilya Sharapov.
The Java Community Process Program Executive Committee
(EC) Elections process began in June 2000. This year's elections will
be hosted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and will run October 1 through
November 14, 2001.
Voting in the EC elections gives you the ability to help select the ten
new members of the EC and to help shape the future of Java
technology.
All Java Community Process Program Members who meet the eligibility
requirements can vote in the EC elections. For more information on the JCP,
see the JCP Overview page:
The Sun software web page contains an overview article on WebNFS Client
SDK for Java technology software. WebNFS Client SDK for Java software
is a 100% Pure Java Software Developer Kit that preserves customers'
investments in Network Operating System (NOS) file servers as
enterprises convert from NOS environments to intranets. It supports a
federated approach to file access, enabling customers to unify their
information stored on various types of servers throughout the
enterprise.
The latest version of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition
(J2EE), version 1.3, simplifies business integration, while
delivering increased functionality for developing and deploying
enterprise-level web services. The J2EE specification is released
along with a reference implementation (RI) and a Technology
Compatibility Kit (TCK).
