Building on a successful year-long collaboration, Sun and Philips
Digital Networks' MP4Net business unit will extensively broaden their
alliance focused on the development and promotion of the MPEG-4
standard for streaming audio, video, and graphics.
As part of the comprehensive co-marketing and technology exchange
agreement, Philips will license Sun StorEdgeTM Media Central server
technology for inclusion in its future WebCine Server MPEG-4 offerings
for the SolarisTM Operating Environment (OE) and Sun CobaltTM
Servers.
The two companies plan on joint promotion and marketing of MPEG-4
products and technology in both the broadband and wireless markets. A
new open-standard replacement for current proprietary streaming
formats, the ISO MPEG-4 standard will allow interactive, rich multimedia
experiences to be streamed to personal computers, mobile phones,
and home entertainment devices.
Earlier this year, Sun and Philips became founding members of the
Internet Streaming Media Alliance. This alliance is dedicated to
promoting the development and use of open standards, such as MPEG-4,
for IP-based media delivery to drive interoperability of rich media
devices and solutions. Sun and Philips have participated in several
ISMA "plugfest" tests to ensure interoperability of their MPEG-4
products with those of other members.
At the IBC exhibition September 14-18 in Amsterdam, Philips
demonstrated MPEG-4 interoperability with Sun and other ISMA members,
and showed the WebCine server running on the Sun platform.
The Philips WebCine MPEG-4 solution can also be experienced on any PC
running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, or Millennium Edition. The
Philips WebCine Player is freely available at http://www.mpeg-4.philips.com,
along with sample content that can be downloaded or streamed.
