Two Editions of Forte for Java, Release 3.0
Community Edition and Enterprise Edition

ForteTM for JavaTM, release 3.0 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) software is available in two editions:

The ForteTM for JavaTM Community Edition is free and includes a web browser, web server, a relational database and support for CORBA, RMI, XML, and source code management. It has the functionality needed for teams of developers building database-aware web applications, including integration with Tomcat (a JavaServer PagesTM (JSPTM) 1.1/Servlets 2.2 reference implementation). Transparent persistence support includes support for all aspects of bean-managed persistence, including bean-managed transactions in session beans and entity beans, and user managed transactions in session beans.

The transparent persistence module makes it easy for developers to map objects to relational database schemas while managing persistence. Developers can build stand-alone applications, applets, JavaTM technology clients and Enterprise JavaBeansTM (EJBTM) technology.

The ForteTM for JavaTM 2, Enterprise Edition, is suited for developing scalable, robust applications and services based on the JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) architecture specification. This edition includes all the functionality of the Community Edition plus support for building and assembling EJB components into applications. It also supports deploying applications to an integrated application server, such as the iPlanetTM Application Server.

The Enterprise Edition also enables you to develop and publish web services with the web services module or add a partner plug-in module that extends your development environment to support standards, such as ebXML, WSDL, UDDI, and SOAP. The Enterprise Edition software includes the Forte for Java Enterprise Service Presentation (ESP) Toolkit. Web designers can work with XML data sources without a knowledge of programming or of device type presentations, and developers can focus on creating the J2EE back end of web services.

The Forte for Java IDE is based on the open source NetBeans Tools Platform. It is modular and extensible, enabling quick integration of wireless smart web services and more. It also integrates with SunTM Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) and with the iPlanet Application Server to debug a generated servlet and with the iPlanetTM Web Server.

For more details on developing dynamic web content, creating and debugging JSP pages and servlet content, and on the Forte code management software (formerly ForteTM TeamWare) module, see the Sun web site.
