One Sun employee was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11. Philip
Rosenzweig, 47, was a director in Sun's software organization and
worked in Burlington, MA.
Phil was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and was a 1976 graduate
of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where he obtained a
degree in computer science.
After joining Sun in January 1991, Phil held key engineering roles in
our software organization and later in Sun Labs. He and his
development team received several patents in new networking
technologies. Phil had recently joined a new group as the director of
horizontal scaling within Sun's Software Systems Group and was in the
early stages of planning this important initiative.
Phil is survived by his wife and two children. We will miss him. Our
prayers and thoughts are with Phil's family and loved ones.
The How-To .Com Executive Perspective by Mark Bauhaus urges companies
to evaluate their entire business and design applications that
take advantage of the Internet for customers and internal processes.
To understand their customers better, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited,
Hong Kong, invested in a customer information system (CIS) that enables
their staff to match corporate marketing and sales strategies and
products more closely to the marketplace by unifying their separate
databases into a single data warehouse. They chose Sun StorEdge Arrays
and Sun Enterprise Servers.
ActivCard, a provider of digital identity products and technology, has
enabled the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) and the U.S.
Department of Defense to utililize Java technology for the
worldwide issuance and management of the Common Access Card (CAC).
These new smart-card based ID badges will replace existing U.S. armed
forces' identification cards and will be distributed to 4.3 million
active duty U.S. military personnel and eligible contractors.
One of the success stories on the Sun web site that documents
successful customer implementations is on Cirqit, a consulting and
software company focused on the printing industry. Cirqit provides print
procurement analysis and software for e-procurement and digital asset
management such as estimate management, bid evaluaiton and order
placement.
Sun and Philips Digital Networks' MP4Net business unit will broaden
their successful year-long collaboration focused on the development and
promotion of the MPEG-4 standard for streaming audio, video and
graphics. As part of the co-marketing and technology exchange
agreement, Philips will license Sun StorEdge Media Central server
technology for inclusion in its future WebCine Server MPEG-4 offerings
for the Solaris Operating Environment(OE) and Sun Cobalt
servers. The two companies plan on joint promotion and marketing of
MPEG-4 products and technology in both the broadband and wireless
markets.
Software development firm Datasign AG creates distributed
applications and offers a range of IT consulting services to its
customers. When a pharmaceutical giant came to Datasign to
develop a data entry system for genomic sample hybridization and a
global, automated ordering system to be shared with several factories
worldwide, Datasign turned to Java technology.
One of the new white papers on the Sun web site is on the Java
HotSpot Virtual Machine (VM). It provides advanced optimization, garbage
collection, and thread synchronization capabilities. Client
applications start up faster and require a smaller memory footprint,
and server applications can achieve better sustained performance over
the long run. The white paper covers topics of the Java HotSpot VM
architecture and compliers.
SunScreen Secure Net 3.1 software protects the privacy and
integrity of a company's database and information, while making the
information available to those who need it. The technical white
paper, "SunScreen Secure Net 3.1," discusses how SunScreen
Secure Net 3.1 software can be applied to an enterprise's data.
There is a white paper available on Solstice Telecommunications
Management. It provides an overview of the Telecommunications
Management Network (TMN) standard as defined by the ITU-T. The

Postini, Inc., chose Sun Enterprise workgroup servers for its email
management services to increase performance and reduce costs. Postini
chose the Sun Enterprise 420R server for its compact size and high
interface capacity. They chose the Netra t-105 server for their
application server for its memory and power.
Sun UltraSPARC III processor-based systems are being used in a
variety of ways, including race cars, pharmaceuticals, and astronomical
research. UltraSPARC III processors power the Sun Fire Midframe
family of servers, the Sun Fire 280R entry-level server, and the Sun
Blade 1000 workstation.

The Sun StorEdge T3 Array storage system is the second
implementation of the innovative T3 architecture in the series. The Sun
StorEdge T3 Array with the next generation controller has four times
the cache and twice the CPU speed. Using the same T3 architecture and
the exact enclosure, back plane, loop cards, drives, and PCUs as its
successful predecessor, the new model using the 1 GB cache controller
is compatible with all the hardware platforms and most of the software
applications.
VERITAS Volume Manager 3.2 is an online disk and storage management tool for
enterprise customers, including those deploying Storage Area Networks
(SAN) and data dependent organizations that require constant and
consistent access to mission critical data. With this enhanced VERITAS
Volume Manager 3.2, system administrators can dynamically configure
disk storage, perform administrative tasks while the system is active,
analyze disk usage and simplify storage administration.
Sun HighGround Storage Resource Manager (SRM) version 5.0 delivers
improved application uptime and return on investment. The updated
release builds on the company's web-based storage resource management
application that provides IT managers with critical utilization,
consumption and availability data about their enterprise storage. The
new version also provides consolidated views and alerts of global
servers.
New features of Sun StorEdge Instant Image 3.0 Software include
multiple shadows of the same master, compacted dependent shadow and
bitmap export/import/join. Sun StorEdge Instant Image Software takes
instant point-in-time snapshots of online data and makes them
available to another application running on the primary or secondary
host.
With the introduction of Sun StorEdge Network Data Replicator 3.0 Software
(SNDR) Sun has bridged the gap of data accessibility under extreme and
unforeseen disastrous situations such as earthquakes, fires, storms, and
terrorist attacks. New features for SNDR 3.0 include one-to-many replication,
I/O Grouping, IPv6 Support, and Checkpoint with Instant Image 3.0.
Elaine Bailey, venture capital industry expert, has written a
three-part series outlining the venture capital process for startups.
The three articles cover details on how to organize information in an
effective presentation to venture capital firm. Bailey offers tips on the

The Sun Code Camps program provides technical content, hands-on

Forte for Java, release 3.0 Integrated Development Environment
(IDE) software is available in two editions, the Community Edition,
which is free and includes a web browser, web server, a relational
database and support for CORBA, RMI, XML and source code management,
and the Enterprise Edition, which is suited for developing scalable,
robust applications and services based on the Java 2 Platform,
Enterprise Edition (J2EE) architecture specification.

The Solaris Developer Connection Program Tech notes features a code

Sprint PCS, the largest 100% digital, nationwide PCS
wireless network operator in the United States, will deploy the
Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) on Sprint PCS phones when
it launches the Sprint PCS third-generation (3G) 1X network nationwide
in mid-2002. Sprint PCS will utilize Java technologies to enhance
consumer experience by enabling graphical, personalized, and
interactive wireless data services.
Sun has released version 3.0 of the Forte for Java Integrated
Development Environment (IDE). Forte for Java, release 3.0, Enterprise
Edition, supports the building and deployment of Java 2 Platform,
Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition
(J2ME) applications. The integration between the Forte for Java IDE
and the iPlanet Application Server 6.0 has been enhanced and
optimized to support the development of enterprise Java technology
applications as well as web services. Sun also contributed seven
modules to the open source project, netbeans.org. The Forte for Java
IDE is built on the NetBeans platform, an extensible, cross-platform,
cross-language IDE.
The white paper, "J2EE vs. Microsoft .NET," by Chad Vawter and Ed Roman,
compares Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) with
Microsoft .NET for businesses considering building XML-based web
services. The authors focus on building server-side systems as web
services using these architectures and provide background information
about web services, J2EE, and .NET. There are illustrations of
developing web services with each of the architectures.
The Sun Developer Essentials web page contains information on the
Java JumpStart Edition, essential Java APIs, technical
articles, sample code, and Internet resources. It also provides the
latest updates to the Java 2 Software Development Kit (SDK)
and many more Java technologies.
James Gosling and Thomas Ulrich review the latest Java technology
programming guide, the "Effective Java Programming Language Guide"
by Joshua Bloch. The book is divided into nine chapters, each covering
a broad aspect of software design, and it can be used as a reference manual
and tutorial guide. The chapters contain 57 programming rules
that are based on fundamental principles and illustrated by sample
code.
A white paper by Sun considers how current Java technology plays
into future services on demand. This movement is in alignment with the
founding vision of Sun (the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE)).
By integrating the key technologies necessary to build services on
demand, developers can utilize Java technology and leverage the
Java 2 Platforms as a base, leaving developers free to focus on
innovation.

as well as being a testament to the power, ease of development,
flexibility, and scalability of the J2EE platform.
"Java Technology Powers E-Manufacturing," the new white paper on
the Sun web site, discusses how web-based technologies are changing the
manufacturing process. This white paper evaluates changing current
production systems to make them web centric and examines the use of Java
technology and XML for connecting the front- and back-end of
e-commerce.
The Java Developer Connection offers two chapters from the book
"Graphic Java 2, Mastering the JFC: AWT, Volume 1" by David M.
Geary online. "Graphic Java 2, Mastering the JFC: AWT, Volume 1"
offers one of the most comprehensive guides to the Java Foundation
Classes (JFC) available.

The just-released book, "Java and XSLT" by Eric M. Burke, illustrates
XSL transformations in Java technology programs ranging from
stand-alone applications to servlets. Included are real-world scenarios
such as developing a discussion forum, converting documents from one
form to another, and generating content for wireless devices. Chapter
5, "XSLT Processing with Java", is available online.
International Data Group (IDG), IT media and information services
company, enhanced and redesigned JavaWorld.com, an online resource
for the Java technology community. There is improved navigation,
expanded search capabilities, increased access to archived information,
and Google's enhanced search functionality.
Bitfone Corporation, a software infrastructure provider for the mobile
Internet, unveiled the iBroker software infrastructure that provides
global wireless carriers with media-rich messaging and personal content
services to enhance end-users' experience on the wireless network.
Bitfone was selected to demonstrate its breakthrough product, iBroker, at
DEMOmobile 2001, an annual executive conference focused exclusively on the
technologies and products that are shaping the mobile and wireless
marketplace.
Ordina TTI, the European systems integrator, has successfully developed
and deployed an e-commerce site for PCM Uitgevers, the large Dutch
publishing company, using the Enterprise Business Components suite of
Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) components from Diamelle
Technologies. Ordina created and implemented an architecture that
utilized the iPlanet Application Server running the Diamelle
Enterprise Business Components. On top of the component layers was a
Java Server Pages (JSP Pages/Servlet layer that handled and
supported the presentation layer using XSLT transformations.
Integration software provider webMethods, Inc., now has a broad range
of product offerings and initiatives targeted at supporting a full range of
integration options for Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition
(J2EE) platform-based application server technologies.
In the 460 page book, "XSLT," (O'Reilly, US) author Doug Tidwell gives
developers a thorough tutorial and reference guide to the language. A
developer with years of XSLT experience, Tidwell explains XSLT by
building from the basics to the more complex but powerful possibilities
of XSLT. "XSLT" includes practical, real-world examples that show how
to apply XSLT stylesheets to XML data. The resulting transformations
run the gamut of XML applications.
