Sun Grant Supports Bioinformatics Foundation

Sun will grant hardware, including servers and a secure storage system, to the Open Bioinformatics Foundation, a group of volunteer developers who create free standards-based tools for life science informatics. The open standards helps with data exchange in the bioinformatics community and saves researchers time and costs.

The Open Bioinformatics Foundation will use NetraTM rackmount servers, a Netra st A1000 storage array and a Sun Cobalt RaQTM 4 rackmount server appliance.

Other research institutions will benefit from open source such as the European Bioinformatics Institute which is a leader of the Ensembl project, an effort to annotate eukaryotic genomes. [...read more...]
