Sun sponsored the first JavaTM Technology Lego MindStorm Challenge
award in Menlo Park, CA earlier this year. Teams competed from UC
Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Stanford University.
UC Santa Cruz presented "SlugBot," a moving robot that plays
one-finger, downloadable melodies on a small keyboard. Stanford's
"MazeBot" used the Lego hosted leJOS framework to execute Java
technology bytecode to solve a JavaServer PagesTM technology-generated
maze. UC Berkeley presented "PaperBot," which won, a robot that
selects and sorts paper by color.
The theme of the challenge was doing more with less. Each team was
restricted to using one and only one Lego Mindstorm Kit (provided by
Sun), and a narrow window of development opportunity. All the teams
attended a luncheon with James Gosling. The conversation was recorded
and is available in MP3 format. Photos are also available online.
