Sun Grows UNIX Marketshare in Q2
Increase of 5.5 Percent
During the second quarter of calendar year 2001, Sun was the only
vendor to grow UNIX marketshare. According to IDC Q2CY01 Server Tracker
report, Sun's total server shipments, including all
operating systems, increased 5.5 percent from Q1 to Q2, more than any
other top five server vendor.

Sun Grant Supports Bioinformatics
Foundation
Open-Source Research Tools
Sun will grant hardware, including servers and a secure storage system,
to the Open Bioinformatics Foundation, a group of volunteer developers
who create free standards-based tools for life science informatics. The open
standards helps with data exchange in the bioinformatics community and
saves researchers time and costs.

Sun and Landmark Graphics Solution for Unocal
UltraSPARC III Platform-based Sun Blade 1000 Workstation
Oil and gas company, Unocal, will use Sun technology to visualize
seismic data. Visualization software from Landmark Graphics and Sun
Blade 1000 workstation with Sun Expert 3D graphics technology
are combined with a flat-screen and single stereoscopic projector
running on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE). Unocal will
use these technologies to help improve departmental-level collaboration
and decision-making in oil and gas exploration and production.

The Autumn SUPerG Program
October 8-11
The Autumn SUPerG program, Sun's technical forum for high-end
Server and Storage customers, will be held October 8-11, 2001 in
Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The program is dedicated to users of Sun Solutions within the data
center and high-performance computing sectors. SUPerG is a technical
forum designed to provide highly interactive and intimate exchanges
between Sun's leading technical experts and engineers and Sun
customers.

Lego MindStorm Challenge Award

Forte Developer Products Boost Productivity
Debugging Multi-Language Applications
Sun has upgraded the Forte Developer suite of products, an
integrated set of development tools designed for building enterprise
applications. The upgrade features new debugging and compiling
capabilities that enable programmers to debug mixed Java technology
language and native C, C++, and Fortran code on the Solaris 8
Operating Environment (OE). Users can now migrate applications more
quickly to Solaris OE. In addition, the new upgrade significantly
improves the interoperability between open source/GNU apps across
Solaris OE and Linux systems.

Britain's Biggest Academic Supercomputer
High Speed Calculations
Britain has launched its biggest academic supercomputer, nicknamed the
Cosmology Machine, based at the University of Durham Physics
Department. The Cosmology Machine gathers information about the
behavior of stars, gases, and enigmatic dark matter throughout the
universe and then calculates, at ultra high speeds, how galaxies and
solar systems evolved.
