The Sun Recovery Assistance web site provides system administrators
with documentation, patches, contact information, and discussion forums
designed to assist customers in the rapid recovery of their computing
environments based on Sun hardware and software products and
solutions.
During the second quarter of calendar year 2001, Sun was the only
vendor to grow UNIX marketshare. According to IDC Q2CY01 Server Tracker
report, Sun's total server shipments, including all
operating systems, increased 5.5 percent from Q1 to Q2, more than any
other top five server vendor.
Sun Educational Services offers web-based Jiro technology
courses, including the Jiro Technology Bundle, the Jiro Technology
Overview, and Getting Started with Jiro Technology.
The next HPC Consortium Meeting is November 10 and 11, 2001, Denver,
Colorado, in conjunction with the IEEE SC2001 Conference. The HPC
Consortium is a Sun Global Education and Research worldwide customer
forum which meets to research and discuss high-end scientific and
engineering computing issues and trends.
Sun will grant hardware, including servers and a secure storage system,
to the Open Bioinformatics Foundation, a group of volunteer developers
who create free standards-based tools for life science informatics. The open
standards helps with data exchange in the bioinformatics community and
saves researchers time and costs.
Oil and gas company, Unocal, will use Sun technology to visualize
seismic data. Visualization software from Landmark Graphics and Sun
Blade 1000 workstation with Sun Expert 3D graphics technology
are combined with a flat-screen and single stereoscopic projector
running on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE). Unocal will
use these technologies to help improve departmental-level collaboration
and decision-making in oil and gas exploration and production.
The Autumn SUPerG program, Sun's technical forum for high-end
Server and Storage customers, will be held October 8-11, 2001 in
Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The program is dedicated to users of Sun Solutions within the data
center and high-performance computing sectors. SUPerG is a technical
forum designed to provide highly interactive and intimate exchanges
between Sun's leading technical experts and engineers and Sun
customers.
Sun's events web page lists upcoming events for September, October, and
November 2001. Events include conferences worldwide on Java
technology, online learning, ISVs, and development.
The Sun education web site lists a number of events that are of
interest to the computing community. These include: EDUCAUSE 2001 KEY
ANNUAL Higher Education Tradeshow, National School Boards Association,
and International SC2001 Conference.
The white paper, "AutoWeb--Making a Difference in Automotive and
Aerospace," available on the Sun web site covers how innovations in
network computing are creating a more efficient workplace. AutoWeb is a
highly secure environment for enterprises in the automotive and
aerospace industries to communicate electronically. Sun provides
innovative solutions to solve the problems of higher performance
systems architectures, resource sharing, interoperability, and global
access.
Sun sponsored the first Java Technology Lego MindStorm Challenge
award in Menlo Park, CA earlier this year. Teams competed from UC
Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Stanford University. All the teams
attended a luncheon with James Gosling. The conversation was recorded

Sun Management Center 3.0 software provides tools for managing
organizational resources and is now available
for free download for an unlimited number of nodes.
The early access version of the GNOME 2.0 Accessibility Framework
answers the call for accessibility by providing tools to help
developers build technologies for employees with disabilities. The
built-in, extensible GNOME Accessibility Framework provides the
foundation for developers to write accessible applications from the
ground up, support existing GNOME applications, and adopt enabling
technologies to the UNIX platform.
The Developer's Guide to the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE),
"Building Web Services with the Java Platform and XML," by James
Kao covers implementing a web services architecture using Java
technology and XML and how XML web services architecture fit with
Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Topics include client tier
connectivity, implementing web services, and performing back-end
integration.
Sun has upgraded the Forte Developer suite of products, an
integrated set of development tools designed for building enterprise
applications. The upgrade features new debugging and compiling
capabilities that enable programmers to debug mixed Java technology
language and native C, C++, and Fortran code on the Solaris 8
Operating Environment (OE). Users can now migrate applications more
quickly to Solaris OE. In addition, the new upgrade significantly
improves the interoperability between open source/GNU apps across
Solaris OE and Linux systems.
The 07/01 update of the Solaris Software Companion CD image is now
available for external download. The Solaris Software Companion CD,
which also ships in the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE) media kit,
contains a comprehensive set of freely available software, providing
interoperability and commonality across both Linux and Solaris OE
environments. There is a list of new and updated packages and a link to
the download page.
The Back to School Initiative from Sun offers schools all its technologies in
one program to help schools leverage Sun technology and expertise.
Sun's newly refocused education business unit matches academic
institutions with the appropriate technologies, including workstations,
information appliances, servers, and software.
The Sun Academic Initiative Program offers courses and creates a
collaborative relationship between Sun and academic institutions to
introduce students to Sun technologies, prepare them for
industry-leading certification, and equip them with marketable IT job

Britain has launched its biggest academic supercomputer, nicknamed the
Cosmology Machine, based at the University of Durham Physics
Department. The Cosmology Machine gathers information about the
behavior of stars, gases, and enigmatic dark matter throughout the
universe and then calculates, at ultra high speeds, how galaxies and
solar systems evolved.
A Beta 2 release of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition
(J2SE) version 1.4 software for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and
Solaris Operating Environment (OE) is now available. New features
include 64-bit support for Solaris OE and SPARC architecture,
new features in Java Foundation Classes/Swing, and new security
features.
New features of the enhanced Internet Exchange Messaging Server (IEMS)
5.1 include now running on Solaris Operating Environment (OE),
