Solstice BackupTM 6.1 software provides the latest data protection
solution for large enterprise through workgroup installations. Support
is now provided for Sun Fibre Channel tape drives and tape libraries
and the latest Sun SAN storage. This product provides an excellent data
protection solution when sold with Sun data storage and tape library
products.
Solstice Backup is an integrated product that addresses the backup,
recovery, and archival needs of heterogeneous computing environments in
large enterprises or departmental workgroups. It supports SolarisTM
Operating Environment (OE) servers, as well as LAN-, WAN-, and
SAN-attached, multi-vendor UNIXR, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and
Novell NetWare platforms. Modules are available for Oracle, Sybase,
Informix, SAP, Lotus Notes/Domino Server, IBM DB2, Microsoft Exchange,
and Microsoft SQL server environments. Solstice Backup also supports an
impressive variety of tape drives, automated tape libraries, and tape
silos, making it a complement for every L9, L20, L180 and L700
Sun StorEdgeTM Tape Library purchase, along with the Sun disk array
product line.
Solstice Backup 6.1 is available in three different editions to match
the IT requirements of each customer. There are various
options to extend coverage, capability, and throughput. Options can be
purchased at any time after installation and can be easily added to a
site without interrupting ongoing operations. This allows a customer
to scale and grow their data protection solution as their storage
needs increase.
New Features
- Fibre Channel Tape Drive support
Solstice Backup 6.1 software offers support for the new Fibre Channel tape
option for Sun StorEdge L700 and L180 tape libraries. Solstice Backup software offers
support of Sun Fibre Channel driver module and tape drives to enable
the latest capability in high speed distributed data movement for both
backup and restore.
Solstice Backup 6.1 software builds on the Solstice Backup 6.0 Software's Library
sharing by adding the capability of dynamically allocating a tape drive to a
Solstice Backup server and/or Storage Nodes or NDMP-enabled NAS storage
devices. Tape drives on centralized libraries can now be allocated to a
Solstice Backup Server and/or multiple Storage Nodes as needed for
backups and restores. This allows for better utilization of tape
drives and improved scalability of tape libraries. Dynamic Drive
Sharing leverages the capability of Sun Fibre Channel tape drives and
libraries to provide a high level of efficiency in physical resource
management.
The SAN Storage Nodes for UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows is
introduced onto the Sun Price List with the release of Solstice Backup
6.1. The SAN Storage Node provides a cost-effective method to achieve
LAN-free backup utilizing a SAN infrastructure. It delivers the same
advanced features and functions as a traditional Storage Node and is
used when a node does not need to backup remote Solstice Backup Client
hosts. Both the SAN Storage Node and traditional Storage Node fully
support SAN technologies for LAN-free backup. The SAN Storage Node is
priced to provide a low-cost method to upgrade Solstice Backup Client
hosts (LAN backup) to use Storage Node technology for LAN-free backup.
- Continued Expansion of NDMP Support
Solstice Backup 6.1 software extends its support for NDMP-based data backups and
restores with the addition of EMC Celerra and Auspex NS2000 onto Sun
Solaris OE servers. Additionally, Solstice Backup NDMP is now available
on Linux (Red Hat, Caldera, SuSE, Turbo Linux on Intel x86) as well.
Direct and third-party backups/restores to directly attached libraries
are supported on Linux (Intel x86) for fast, safe data protection for
the large numbers of files typically stored on NAS devices.
Also, Solstice Backup 6.1 Software introduces support for Direct Access
Restore (DAR). DAR enables faster NDMP data restores by rapidly
positioning the tape media to the file to be restored rather than
having to scan the entire tape to search for the file.
Library Sharing is now standard Solstice Backup 6.1 Software. Customers no
longer are required to purchase an option to use this important
functionality.
Cluster Client Licenses for Linux are now offered by Sun. These
options enhance data protection by providing capability
to backup Linux Clients in cluster configurations.
