Solaris Operating Environment for the Intel 32-Bit Architecture
Hardware Certification Programs

As the momentum and demand for the SolarisTM Operating Environment (OE) (Intel Platform Edition) continues to grow, Sun continues to develop Solaris OE for this 32-bit platform (IA32). There are also certification programs for hardware manufacturers and IHVs. Sun's planned priorities for the future are:

  • Engineering and marketing initiatives to capture the widest possible set of software and device drivers for the IA32 platform.

  • Focusing our independent hardware vendor (IHV) and device driver priorities toward the needs of volume commodity platforms and self-certification programs.

  • Increasing the Linux affinity and encouraging integration with other platforms, including running Linux/Intel binaries unmodified on Solaris OE IA32.

  • Continued access to source code for both Solaris OE (Intel Platform Edition) and SPARCTM platform.

  • Continued parallel releases of Solaris OE for IA32 and SPARC platoform.

  • Sun intends to select a preferred reference platform from the many companies that already supply compatible systems and use this preferred platform in engineering, marketing, and sales activities to track compatibility between Solaris OE and the IA32 architecture.

There is a Solaris OE (Intel Platform Edition) Hardware Certification Program for systems and controllers. This program enables independent hardware vendors (IHVs), system manufacturers, system integrators, and end users to certify their controllers and systems on Solaris OE Intel Platform Edition at one of two levels. All hardware passing Level 1 or Level 2 Certification is eligible to be included in the Solaris OE (Intel Platform Edition) Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

The Systems Hardware Certification Program is designed to help system manufacturers demonstrate that their PC systems, servers, and related peripherals are compatible with Solaris OE (Intel Platform Edition).

  • Level 1 Systems Hardware Certification enables system manufacturers to certify their systems by downloading a test suite developed by Sun, running the tests, and submitting the test results to Sun for audit.

  • Level 2 Systems Hardware Certification enables system manufacturers to certify their systems by downloading a test suite developed by Sun, running the tests, and submitting the test results to Sun for audit. When a system passes this level of testing, it will receive a priority listing in the HCL.

The Controller Hardware Certification Program enables IHVs to certify that the controllers supported by the device drivers under test are compatible with Solaris Intel Platform Edition.

  • Level 1 Controller Hardware Certification enables IHVs who have developed controllers to download a test suite developed by Sun for functional testing of controllers, and then submit the test results to Sun for audit.

  • Level 2 Controller Hardware Certification enables IHVs who have developed controllers to download a test suite developed by Sun for functional testing of controllers at a higher level than Level 1 testing, and then submit the test results to Sun for audit. When a controller passes Level 2 testing, he is eligible to apply for the SolarisTM Ready logo. [...read more...]
