The ebXML Registry/Repository 1.0 Implementation is based on JavaTM 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EETM) technology and provides an important infrastructure component for businesses to conduct highly interoperable e-commerce transactions in a consistent, predictable, standards-based manner. An article on Sun's web site explains what developers get with the free download announced at the JavaOneSM Conference and how it adds value to IT operations. The article also covers both business perspectives and technical details, including the value of registries and repositories in e-business infrastructure and details on J2EE technology, Electronic Business XML (ebXML), and Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI).

Web services in general, and e-business models in particular, demand directory infrastructures that enable flexible management of relationships among constantly evolving pools of business organizations. Registries and repositories provide advertising for a business's services and a storage place for underlying XML and e-business resources. Because these can be expensive, the Sun ebXML Registry/Repository Implementation (RegRep) can be used to submit, store, retrieve, and manage resources to facilitate ebXML-based business-to-business (B2B) partnerships and transactions.

The RegRep implementation uses Enterprise JavaBeansTM (EJBTM) technology, thereby reducing development complexity while providing automatic support for middleware services such as database connectivity, transaction management, scalability, and security. The RegRep package is available for free download, and is useful for any developer using the JavaTM technology platform who needs a registry to submit, store, and retrieve XML resources.

From a development standpoint, XML schemas and data are easy to clone; what is more difficult is coming up with the infrastructure that allows everything to work together. The RegRep package provides a storage container that supports the underlying ebXML infrastructure for smooth B2B transactions, allowing the developer to focus on developing applications.

ebXML is complementary to UDDI, expanding the capabilities of UDDI by providing a richer security model and a more comprehensive registry service application programming interface (API) that can access e-business resources.
