Sun Microsystems and One 2 One will collaborate to develop and deploy interactive financial and entertainment services based on Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) and Mobile Information Device (MID) profile specifications. Developed by wireless industry experts as the content platform for interactive services, the combination of J2ME technology and the MID profile provides One 2 One with an extremely rich and powerful content environment to create and launch next-generation wireless services.

In the initial entertainment services rollout, One 2 One will focus in the area of interactive and networked games. Consumers can play these games in an offline mode or they can compete interactively with other players across the wireless network. Java technologies provide entertainment content providers with a rich graphical user interface environment for the development of these wireless games.

On the financial service end, J2ME provides a secure environment for mobile commerce services. Java applications on mobile phones can actively monitor and alert consumers of significant events relating to their stock portfolios or bank accounts. For example, the applications could notify the consumer immediately when an account has been overdrawn or if the price of a specific stock fluctuates beyond designated limits.

"This collaboration underscores Sun's commitment to deliver the service-driven network vision into the wireless industry by helping wireless service providers, device manufacturers and content providers to deliver next-generation interactive services to consumers," said Curtis Sasaki, director, Product Marketing, Sun's Consumer Technologies. "Leveraging the cross platform benefits of Java technologies, One 2 One and content providers gain the flexibility to deliver interactive wireless services onto a wide variety of handset in One 2 One's GSM/GPRS network."

"One 2 One chose to work with Sun to develop a J2ME-based solution because of the flexibility that it allows us to work with a variety of developers and manufacturers," said Craig Tillotson, director of Business Strategy, One 2 One. "In today's fast-paced, Internet-driven society, a Java technology-based solution provides us with a competitive edge, allowing us to rapidly and cost-effective deploy new wireless services to consumers."
