Volume 27, Issue 1

Sun's leading silicon partners are shipping a wide range of hardware chip solutions that further enhance the performance, power utilization, or chip functionality for consumer products utilizing the Java platform. These semiconductor solutions should further drive the widespread adoption of the Java platform by facilitating design wins and allowing manufacturers to reduce costs and development cycles, getting their products to market faster.

Partners currently developing or shipping hardware solutions include aJile, ARM, Fujitsu, inSilicon, JEDI, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola, Patriot Scientific, Smart Network Devices, Sun, and Zucotto.

Java-enabled chip solutions are ideal for today's mobile products where memory footprint, processor performance, and power utilization are critical issues to address because consumers expect a good user experience with devices that are affordable and responsive -- and have a long battery life. In addition to mobile devices, these silicon solutions are targeted at a broad range of consumer products including handheld communicators, digital TVs, residential gateways, automotive solutions such as car navigation systems, and deeply embedded products like point-of-sale terminals and digital cameras.

Device manufacturers developing products can choose from a broad range of silicon vendors to work with, all offering distinctive advantages that address the demanding requirements of mobile devices, set-top boxes, and other embedded products. By working with these hardware partners, manufacturers can get impressive Java technology benchmark results or unique on-chip solutions for emerging standards such as Bluetooth, which enables wireless communication between devices. Hardware solutions combined with Java technology allow a wide range of companies to create processors that provide value-added support using standard APIs developed through the Java Community Process.
