Can't Move To The Cloud? The Cloud Can Come To You
Forbes, July 20th 2017
"A lot of companies and government agencies would like to move IT operations to a public cloud, but local regulatory restrictions or other concerns prevent the move. Now, however, the cloud can come to them, inside their own data centers.

A relatively new style of cloud service can help knock down barriers to cloud adoption by giving organizations the advantages of cloud while helping address local rules that once kept them out..."

Automation Not Optional: How Containers, Microservices, And Serverless Apps Change The Cloud
    Forbes, July 19th 2017
"Building and deploying software is vastly different from how it was done just a few years ago. With the popularity of containers and microservices, developers can push out a new crop of cloud-native applications faster than ever. But technologies that make developers' lives easier still tend to create complexity for the IT operations teams that have to keep those apps running, warns Daniel Lopez Ridruejo, cofounder and CEO of San Francisco-based Bitnami, which provides open source application packages for Oracle Cloud and other IT infrastructure service providers..."

Giant Icebergs And The Keys To Improving Customer Experiences
      Forbes, July 17th 2017
"A recent article in The New York Times describes how a huge chunk of ice the size of Delaware broke away from the Antarctic Peninsula and now stands as one of the largest icebergs ever recorded. The break-off has been anticipated for years, but only recently have the implications of the separation taken shape.

While many of us will never make the trek to Antarctica, we can appreciate the scale of this rift, as it reshapes the topography so dramatically that every map of the world will need to be redrawn. What's more, the Antarctic landscape will continue to change, requiring cartographers to continually adjust their representations of the frozen tundra..."

Artificial Intelligence In The Workplace - Are Robots Taking Over?
        ITProPortal, July 21st 2017
"What exactly does artificial intelligence (AI) mean in practice? To most, there is a fear associated with it. It spells catastrophe for the human race. First, it will take over our jobs and before we know it, we will have no place in this world. However, AI has the ability to improve how we operate as well as our experiences..."

          ITProPortal, July 17th 2017

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a key driver behind many of the biggest developments in this regard, and recently the collective sights of companies invested in this industry have moved towards customer service. So does this mean AI will soon herald the long-anticipated demise of the customer complaints department? Let's not get too optimistic early on..."
What An Artificial Intelligence Researcher Fears About AI
Homeland Security News Wire, July 17th 2017
Arend writes, "As an artificial intelligence researcher, I often come across the idea that many people are afraid of what AI might bring. It's perhaps unsurprising, given both history and the entertainment industry, that we might be afraid of a cybernetic takeover that forces us to live locked away, "Matrix"-like, as some sort of human battery. Might I become "the destroyer of worlds," as Robert Oppenheimer lamented after spearheading the construction of the first nuclear bomb? Perhaps the critics are right. Maybe I shouldn't avoid asking: As an AI expert, what do I fear about artificial intelligence?..."
What's The Difference Between Machine Learning And Deep Learning?
              Business 2 Community, July 18th 2017
"Understanding how today's AI works might seem overwhelming, but it really boils down to two concepts you probably have heard of before: 'machine learning' and 'deep learning'. Neither are brand new ideas, but the way they're used seems to constantly evolve. Machine learning and deep learning are how Netflix knows what you might want to watch next, or how Facebook can recognize your friends' face in a photo, or how a support agent can figure out if you'll be satisfied with your customer service.

So what are these buzzwords that still dominate the conversations about AI, and how exactly are they different? And what do they mean for customer service?..."

              architectingIT, July 17th 2017
"It wasn't that long ago we were being promised hard drives of unimaginable capacities. I'm sure that at some stage triple digit numbers were being talked about. However today we're stuck with a 'mere' 12TB of capacity per drive. So what went wrong, or are we just being a little too hopeful?

I did some looking back to see exactly what we had been promised and what was more conjecture on the part of journalists. Here's what I found:..."

HDD Cost/GB Calculated on 75,000 Drives
      , July 18th 2017
"For HDD prices, the race to zero is over: nobody won. For the past 35+ years or so, HDDs prices have dropped, from around $500,000 per gigabyte in 1981 to less than $0.03 per gigabyte today.

This includes the period of the Thailand drive crisis in 2012 that spiked HDD prices. Matthew Komorowski has done an admirable job of documenting the HDD price curve through March 2014 and we'd like to fill in the blanks with our own drive purchase data to complete the picture. As you'll see, the HDD pricing curve has flattened out..."

Despite this obvious shift toward new-school open source data infrastructure (MongoDB, Apache Hadoop, Apache Kafka, etc.), the old-school data infrastructure giants, from Oracle to HPE Vertica to IBM, continue to mint billions of dollars in revenue (and profits)..."

"Building a DevOps team is about people, organization, even tables, chairs and office space.

Implementing a true DevOps structure for a team is dependent on speed, collaboration, empathy and openness. This means you must be comfortable moving away from legacy structures that slow work down - separated teams, one-way delivery cycles, six-month release schedules, change-frozen systems, calcified ITIL processes, etc. - and embrace a culture of rapid iteration, with cohesive teams and activities in place to support it. All of this is necessary because at its core, DevOps is all about collaboration, teamwork and breaking down siloes..."

"Just because you don't see the server doesn't mean it's not there. Serverless frameworks are superseding containers, but is the extra abstraction worth it?

"Cloud outages do happen. So, how can you and your IT group minimize the impact on the company?

Imagine a scenario where the unthinkable happens. Your company's cloud provider suffers a major outage that grinds business to a halt. While the IT department and CIO are busy placing blame of the outage on the provider, the rest of the organization is likely to blame the internal IT staff for the disruption in service. So that begs the question, where does the responsibility for outages lie, and what can be done to mitigate outage risk?..."

                                      IoT Orchestration Coming, But Slowly
IT Business Edge, July 17th 2017
"The closer the enterprise gets to a broad Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, the more urgently it feels the need for a functioning orchestration layer. Unfortunately, aside from a few rudimentary steps toward basic interoperability and data management, it seems that full-stack orchestration will have to wait a while.

This is a problem both for the enterprise and IoT systems developers because without a high degree of coordination across IoT infrastructure, deployments are not likely to achieve the scale that brings true value to broad data collection and analysis..."

In an idealized version of future roadways, cars and buses zip along with minimal traffic or accidents, using automation and connectivity tools to anticipate and prepare for everything from changing traffic signals to patches of black ice. In a darker scenario, hackers leverage those new connections to infect vehicles and infrastructure - causing gridlock by turning all of a city's traffic lights red, spying on drivers through their cars or even demanding ransom payments in exchange for releasing control over a bus's steering or braking system..."

However, in an SDDC all those infrastructure elements are virtualized and delivered as a service. In other words, the software is abstracted away from the hardware, which allows organizations to manage their compute, storage and networking resources as virtual pools. Instead of having to configure hardware manually, staff can control their infrastructure from one central software interface..."

"Data storage is an intangible component of the technological landscape, but is often unnoticed. As the unsung hero of the tech world, it's the core infrastructure that is key to maintaining web operations. It has also been estimated to be worth over $77.5 Billion by 2022 (according to Markets and Markets).

Most of us are aware the impact that the cloud and AI have made on how we look at data, but we rarely talk about how these developments impact data centers. Not long ago, data centers were the primary locations for shared information. Today, however, data centers' value proposition are evolving. While the data center isn't going to become obsolete anytime soon, it's definitely growing and shifting with tech, making it one of the most dynamic areas. Here's why:..."

In fact, the market for data center services seems to be expanding rapidly. The trend toward cloud computing has been a boon to data center providers as many of them count companies like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and IBM among their customers. According to Structure Research, the colocation market was worth $33.59 billion in 2016, a number that is likely to grow 15.2 percent in 2017. There's no doubt that Docker's debut in 2013 changed the game in significant ways for traditional virtualization. Organizations that had once depended on VMware or KVM for all of their software deployment needs found a new option in Docker. Docker made application containers a practical alternative to virtual machines.

There's also no doubt that the Docker revolution is forcing VMware and other companies to change their strategy in major ways. They can't count on keeping their customers simply by providing a compelling alternative to bare-metal servers..."

In it he argues that developer led adoption of technology - the new kingmaker thesis - is why microservices are different from SOA.

Apart from being made to feel old - we now live in a world where SOA can be described as 'archaic' I thought it was worth adding some colour about why and how things are different this time around, and why and how microservices are indeed different..."

We've recently seen data science shift markedly from a peripheral capability to a core function, with larger teams tackling increasingly complex analytics problems. We've watched rapid advances in data science platforms and their big implications for data and analytics teams. But what surprises are in store in the realm of data, analytics and machine learning going forward?

Having continually developed ever since, integrating new technologies to strengthen our understanding of the social side of business, today's businesses rely heavily on consumer data in order to successfully attract customers and increase growth.
