Next-Gen Conversational AI Opens Doors For Enterprise Integrations
ITProPortal, February 16th, 2017
"Will businesses embrace the power of voice in 2017?

New voice-enabled devices have proven to be a breakout hit with consumers in 2016. For businesses embracing innovation, this opportunity represents a land grab as large and important as when Apple first opened the iOS App Store in 2008. Google now processes roughly 40,000 search queries every second. This translates to more than 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide. ComScore predicts that by 2020, 50 percent of all searches will be voice searches..."

Who Will Untap The Next Big Thing In Machine Learning? Hint: It's Not Our Data Scientists
insideBIGDATA, February 13th, 2017
"In this special guest feature, Michael Liberty, COO and co-founder of Signifyd, argues that an overabundance of data scientists is slowing the growth of machine learning. What's needed is a better balance of data scientists and engineers who can produce machine learning insights at industrial scale. Prior to Signifyd, Michael was the Head of Digital Goods and Platform Risk at PayPal. Michael holds an A.B. in Economics from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Stanford..."
Monday Spotlight: It's About Security - Oracle Exadata SL6
By Scott Lynn, February 13th, 2017
Scott blogs, " If you read my co-worker Gurmeet's Blog, you'll see the Exadata SL6 is one incredible machine. However, I want to talk about a very important aspect of the Exadata SL6 that I don't think is getting enough play: its security features.

We've been fighting the security battle for years now and it has become a booming business estimated at $445 billion in 2016. You could even say that hackers are the new mafia. But that's just the business side of cyberattacks. There's also state-sponsored cyberattacks. It's really cyberwarfare and it's playing out every day around the globe with every credit card transaction, every mobile phone call and every social media interaction. Somewhere, someone is being cyberattacked while you read this. It's estimated that it costs the healthcare industry $200,000'1''2' every minute of every day worldwide.

Now, I'm not trying to be alarmist. But we need to talk about this. For decades, we've worked hard to protect our data centers by attempting to keep people out. And that worked for a while..."

Friday Spotlight: Oracle Private Cloud Appliance Multi-tenancy
By Jeff Savit, February 17th, 2017
Jeff blogs, "Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) is an engineered system for quickly deploying Oracle VM environments. Integrating compute, network and storage components in a converged infrastructure solution, PCA lets customers deploy VMs within hours of initial power-up.

Many customers treat the PCA as a pool of compute power shared by all guest VMs. Others need to guarantee isolation for multiple 'tenants' (different customers, clients or departments) and do so by dedicating servers to tenants, for concerns of security, chargeback or resource isolation..."

    IT - Storage
Why Reinvent Deduplication? Isn't Cloud Storage Cheap?, February 16th, 2017
"Most people assume cloud storage is cheaper than on-premises storage. After all, why wouldn't they? You can rent object storage for $276 per terabyte per year or less, depending on your performance and access requirements. Enterprise storage costs between $2,500 to $4,000 per terabyte per year, according to analysts at Gartner and ESG.

This comparison makes sense for primary data, but what happens when you make backups or copies of data for other reasons in the cloud? Imagine that an enterprise needs to retain three years of monthly backups of a 100TB data set. In the cloud, this can be easily equate to 3.6PB of raw backup data, or a monthly bill of more than $83,000. That's about $1 million a year, even before factoring in and data access or retrieval charges..."

3 Enterprise-Strength File Sync Services To Check Out
    ComputerWorld, February 15th, 2017
"Licensing and deployment flexibility also figure prominently for business use.

This should be the year your organization looks to dump its consumer file-sharing software. Don't get me wrong -- many of those services are great for individuals, but they're not really suitable for enterprises. There are other products, however, that offer the file sync that Dropbox and Box and others do so well and so seamlessly, while also providing enterprise-level controls around access, encryption, identity, and more..."

Is Liquid Cooling Ready To Go Mainstream?
    HPCWire, February 13th, 2017
"It's no secret that heat is a killer of electronics - performance, density, reliability, and energy efficiency all suffer. In this commentary Steve Campbell, co-founder and managing partner at OrionX, a strategy and research firm, contends liquid cooling may be closer than we think to widespread use in HPC and traditional datacenters and no longer just the purview of supercomputers. Many of the benefits are familiar. Campbell argues that improved cooling technology, expanding offerings from vendors, and potentially major energy savings are the drivers of the liquid cooling adoption trend. SC16, he says, may have represented an early tipping point. See if you agree..."

3 Big Blockchain Ideas MIT Is Working On Right Now
    CoinDesk, February 17th, 2017
"When one of the world's most prestigious universities announces it will explore a controversial and often misunderstood subject best known for piquing the interests of thieves and speculators, people tend to take notice.

That's what happened in July 2015, when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) revealed it would embark on its Digital Currency Initiative (DCI) - led by a former White House advisor, no less..."

Is It Time To Remove UK Banks From The Bitcoin Ecosystem?
      NEWSBTC, February 13th, 2017
"Over the past few years, a lot of bitcoin exchanges had to deal with issues related to UK banks. Even though bitcoin is legal in an unregulated manner in the UK, banks are not too keen on cryptocurrency. Some experts argue it is due time to take British banks out of the bitcoin exchange industry altogether. Doing so would have catastrophic events, though, as it limits both deposit and withdrawal options for a lot of users. Then again, with banks continuing to deny service to bitcoin companies, something has to change sooner or later..."
Bank Of Canada: Digital Currencies Need Regulation To Succeed
      CoinDesk, February 17th, 2017
"Researchers from Canada's central bank argue that private digital currencies like bitcoin won't succeed in the long-term without some kind of government involvement.

A paper published this week by researchers at the Bank of Canada examines the viability of digital currency, looking to past examples of Canadian currency - public 'Dominion' notes and private bank notes from the 19th-to-20th centuries - as a guide..."

Top 10 FOSS Legal Stories In 2016, February 16th, 2017
"The year 2016 resulted in several important developments that affect the FOSS ecosystem. While they are not strictly 'legal developments' they are important for the community.

For one, Eben Moglen, the general counsel of the Free Software Foundation, stepped down. Eben has been a leader on FOSS legal issues since the late 1990s and has been critical to the success of the FOSS movement. The FOSS community owes him a huge debt of gratitude, and I expect that he will continue to be active in the FOSS community. The success of FOSS adoption was dramatically illustrated when Microsoft joined the Linux Foundation and summarized in the article, Open Source Won. So, Now What? in Wired magazine..."

      10 Open Source Challenges (Slideshow)
      Datamation, February 13th, 2017
"For the open source movement, things seem to be going better than ever. Desktop Linux still hasn't caught on the way advocates had hoped, but within the enterprise, open source is becoming the norm.A Black Duck survey found that 65 percent of enterprises increased their use of open source software in 2016, and open source software is dominating in areas like big data analytics, containerization, development tools, cloud infrastructure, the Internet of things (IoT) and others.

However, if the community is going to continue to thrive, it will need to find a way to deal with some very big challenges..."

In DevOps, Speed Isn't Always The Point, February 16th, 2017
"The high-tech industry has fallen into a rut and seems to be struggling to get out of it. This rut is most fervently seen when talking about DevOps, but it exists across the board.

We've fallen in love with the idea that faster is always better. That idea is provably false, and the assumption that everything needs to be faster is false, also..."

Your Big Data Strategy Needs DevOps
      InformationWeek, February 16th, 2017
"Many big data analytics teams choose to not use DevOps methodologies, but there are real benefits to applying DevOps concepts to those big data initiatives.

Extracting accurate and meaningful answers from big data is tough. It's often made more challenging given the way big data software developers and IT operations lack coordination in many enterprises. Even though an IT organization may practice sound DevOps strategies for other supported applications, big data projects often remain siloed for a variety of reasons..."

The speed of business today affects every part of the organisation, and IT is no exception. That's why traditional methods of developing and deploying software that split up the process into multiple teams and departments are being replaced by newer, more agile techniques such as DevOps. This removes silos to get people, process and tools working together to make the product delivery lifecycle faster and more predictive..."

MySQL on Docker: Composing the Stack
      By Severalnines, February 15th, 2017
Severalnines blogs, "Docker 1.13 introduces a long-awaited feature called compose-file support, which allow us to define our containers with a nice simple config file instead of a single long command. If you have a look at our previous 'MySQL on Docker' blog posts, we used multiple long command lines to run containers and services. By using compose-file, containers are easily specified for deployment. This reduces the risk for human error as you do not have to remember long commands with multiple parameters.

In this blog post, we'll show you how to use compose-file by using simple examples around MySQL deployments. We assume you have Docker Engine 1.13 installed on 3 physical hosts and Swarm mode is configured on all hosts..."

        ITProPortal, February 16th, 2017
"Can the data fragmentation caused by the adoption of SaaS and the cloud be undone?

When the Great Recession hit in 2007, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) began to catch the attention of enterprise CIOs as a favorable way to reduce the CAPEX necessary to provide their businesses with world-class IT services, and deliver more predictable OPEX. Fiscal reasoning may have been the carrot-on-the-stick, but CIOs were just as smitten by the promise of a simplified IT environment..."

Cloud Agnosticism: Does The Survival Of Current Cloud Providers Matter?
        Information Age, February 16th, 2017
"While hosting all of your data and applications on one cloud platform is the easiest way to manage cloud storage, it is not always the wisest choice...

Remember that time when S3 went down? How about when SSL certificates in every Azure data centre expired at the same time, bringing every region down at once? Did you enjoy working with an independent public cloud vendor like SoftLayer, only to have them get acquired by IBM?

Whether you're dealing with downtime, an acquisition, or an exit from the market entirely, how much does the survival of your cloud provider matter? A lot, actually. And that's why a cloud agnostic approach to your data and applications is best..."

We've been talking about the cloud for some years now and, while we may look back at 2016 as a year of growing enterprise cloud adoption, 2017 is likely to be the year when hybrid clouds really enter the mainstream. Cloud is no longer 'optional' for enterprises looking to remain competitive: with businesses demanding ever-greater agility from their IT functions and with data growth continuing to explode at an alarming rate, more and more IT departments are looking to move critical IT services to a combination of private and public cloud..."

Increasingly, corporate end users circumvent IT to deploy and maintain their own cloud-based software and services. The trend, termed shadow IT, is the result of a technologically savvy workforce unwilling to settle for sub-par application performance, device incompatibility or inadequate application features. Mother Nature Attacks! Is Your Disaster Recovery Plan Ready?
Data Center Knowledge, February 14th, 2017
"Between data breaches that steal customer and employee data, or the latest ransomware attack that demands a massive payout, where do natural disasters fit in to your list of worries for losing valuable corporate data? Mother Nature has an arsenal of weapons at her disposal including massive storms that cause days worth of power outages, floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes that do physical damage to your data center, and lightning strikes that could cause building fires. Those are just some reasons to put them high on your list for a crisis response plan..."

Why Using A VPN While Surfing Internet On Public Wi-Fi Can Be A Lifesaver
                Techworm, February 15th, 2017
"Public Wi-Fi has become a lifeline for people on the go or professionals that travel for work, whether it's in the airport, hotel, or cafes. But convenience and connectivity can come at a price. Public Wi-Fi networks, especially free ones, are not secure and can be easily tampered with. Users on these networks should be wary that their browsing habits or login information could be open season.

There are several steps you can take to be safer on public Wi-Fi..."

Wireless Mesh Networks In The Enterprise
                Network Computing, February 13th, 2017
"Mesh WiFi is all the rage in the consumer space, but is it viable for business?

Thanks to consumer-focused WiFi systems from the likes of Google, Eero, Ubiquity, and Linksys, wireless mesh networking is getting a lot of attention. The idea behind mesh WiFi is that a single WiFi access point is hard-wired into the LAN. This WiFi gateway then connects other non-wired WiFi repeaters that are deployed throughout an area. Since the wireless signal is dispersed among the various nodes, a mesh network can provide better wireless coverage to areas that would be prone to dead spots compared to a centralized WiFi deployment in which nodes only communicate with a single access point..."

"Why is everyone talking about the Internet of Things (IoT)? It's not because the IoT is a new concept - it's not - but rather because the IoT intersects with several other key trends in the tech world, from open source and big data to cybersecurity and software-defined networking.

If you think the IoT is a new thing, think again. The term Internet of Things has been around since the late 1990s. Devices other than computers and phones have been connecting to the Internet for decades. Neither the concept nor the substance of the IoT is very novel..."

"What happens if a bad actor turns off your heat in the middle of winter, then demands $1,000 to turn it back on? Or even holds a small city's power for ransom? Those kinds of attacks to personal, corporate, and infrastructure technology were among the top concerns for security experts from the SANS Institute, who spoke Wednesday during the RSA conference in San Francisco.

Some of these threats target consumers directly, but even the ones that target corporations could eventually 'filter down' to consumers, though the effects might not be felt for some time..."

                  ITProPortal, February 15th, 2017
"Currently outdated security measures are struggling against rising threats though the right investments and security strategies can easily rectify this...

The consensus is clear: cybersecurity is a major challenge and key budget priority for businesses. According to the Cybersecurity Market Report, worldwide spending on cybersecurity will top $1 trillion for the five-year period from 2017 to 2021. A recent global survey by Citrix and the Ponemon institute found that 98% of businesses will spend at least $1 million in the coming year on security. How To Lock Down Your Security System
                  CSO Online, February 13th, 2017
"As long as data is online there will always be concerns over cyber security. There are many steps a business can take to help better protect their physical security systems from cyber threats. From simple things like not using default or simple passwords, to more advanced steps like using PKI certificates and making sure you download the latest firmware - each are important to keeping your data, and your network, secure.

However, many times an IT department might not be taking all the necessary steps to consider protecting all devices on their network simply because they may not be aware of these solutions as part of the traditional network infrastructure. John Bartolac, senior manager of segment teams and cyber security for Axis Communications N.A., shares six important steps organizations should consider in addressing cyber risk mitigation across all network solutions..."

Five Ways To Prevent Data Leaks
Help Net Security, February 13th, 2017

While Target's internal security team was using all of the right protocols, it was an external contractor who ultimately provided the way in. No matter how locked down an IT department is, most breaches occur when a third-party provider is involved, allowing the leakage of critical data such as passwords or IP.

For IT leaders, it's a bit of deja vu: for the fifth straight year, the Tech Hiring and Retention Survey from executive search and technology firm Harris Allied shows that management's top concern is finding and hiring elite tech talent.

That concern edged out other pressing concerns, including 'keeping the teams they have in place' and 'staying competitive with regard to salary and bonuses,' according to the survey, which polled 120 IT executives in November and December of 2016..."

While the need for increased privacy and the avoidance of Know Your Customer regulations is known to be the driving force behind Localbitcoins and other forms of P2P trading volume in the developed world, much less is known about Localbitcoins's popularity in places like Russia and Venezuela. The Data Center Journal, February 16th, 2017
"I was recently briefed on yet another painful breach; an employee, thinking they were responding to a request from the CEO, provided confidential information on employees to an attacker who apparently intended to use it to steal their identities.

A new report from ProofPoint has concluded that the use of CEOs is declining for this kind of attack, and that sounds like good news, until you read further and realize that this is because attackers now have the ability to identify supervisors and more tightly target these phishing attacks using the names of more immediate superiors. What Is The Point Of Learning C?
                            CIO, February 14th, 2017
"Take a look at the TIOBE Programming Community Index - an indicator of the popularity of programming languages - and you'll see that Google's Go and, to a lesser extent, Dart and Perl are trending up. The venerable C, however, is a language whose popularity is plummeting, according to the index.

In a world where there is huge demand for mobile and web applications coded in higher-level languages that are easy to learn and debug and difficult to make mistakes in - at least compared to C - one might assume there's no reason to bother with a low-level language that's going out of fashion.

Does this mean that C isn't worth learning? The answer isn't quite that simple..."

When using these services such as parcel delivery lockers in apartments or public facilities, or when using car sharing services, user authentication will need to take place each time a service is used. With existing ID and password systems, users have to manage multiple IDs and passwords which make the authentication process cumbersome.

                            HP News
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Delivers First-to-Market Data-centric IoT Security
HPE SecureData for Hadoop and IoT seamlessly integrates with Apache NiFi ecosystem, adding Format-Preserving Encryption to wide-scale dataflows
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) introduced HPE SecureData for Hadoop and IoT, designed to easily secure sensitive information that is generated and transmitted across Internet of Things (IoT) environments, with HPE Format-preserving Encryption (FPE). The solution features the industry's first-to-market Apache NiFi integration with NIST standardized and FIPS compliant format-preserving encryption technology to protect IoT data at rest, in transit and in use.

While IoT provides a vast amount of data that can deliver valuable insights and analytics to help organizations innovate, the influx of connected devices also presents new security challenges and attack vectors. There have been a number of IoT exploits in recent years, such as hacking into a connected car, connected camera vulnerabilities, and DDoS attacks, but what's alarming is that this may only be the beginning as enterprises look to deploy IoT across their networks. According to a Gartner survey, security is the top barrier to IoT success cited by respondents (35%), followed closely by cost and funding concerns (32%).

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Unveils Most Significant 3PAR Flash Storage Innovations to Date
Next-generation 3PAR OS provides foundation for Hybrid IT as all-flash becomes the new normal
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced its most significant set of 3PAR storage innovations to date, including a next-generation HPE 3PAR Operating System that provides a futureproof foundation for hybrid IT.

                            • New 3PAR Adaptive Data Reduction (ADR) delivers comprehensive data compaction to lower capacity costs.
                            • Updates to 3PAR Peer Persistence mitigate risks by enabling disaster recovery across greater distances.
                            • Off-premises copy management with HPE Recovery Manager Central (RMC) extends data protection beyond the array.
                            • Expanded automation capabilities for 3PAR StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) improve business agility.

As all-flash storage becomes the new normal, customers are realizing that pure-play all-flash systems cannot address the new requirements arising from this 'third wave' of flash evolution. These new demands go beyond the performance or cost of an individual flash array, meaning that all-flash storage vendors must also help customers simplify operations across the data center, mitigate risks from edge to core to cloud and support hybrid IT transformation. The HPE 3PAR innovations announced today provide customers a futureproof solution for these third-wave demands with support for cloud-native applications, datacenter-wide orchestration, tier-1 resiliency and a seamless path to emerging technologies such as storage class memory (SCM) and NVM Express (NVMe).

Ric writes, "Last month, HPE announced plans to acquire SimpliVity, a leading provider of software-defined, hyperconverged infrastructure. Today, I'm thrilled to announce that the deal has closed, which gives both companies the official green light to begin integration plans.

There are many things about this acquisition that provide real customer value, but the things I'm most excited about are the strength of the people joining HPE and the roadmap that we will deliver for customers as a combined company.

By bringing together HPE's best-in-class infrastructure, automation and cloud management software with SimpliVity's industry-leading software-defined data management platform, we will deliver the best and most comprehensive hyperconverged offering to the market..."

Druva's latest feature helps protect data stored on its service from ransomware
                                  Druva, February 13th, 2017
Ron Miller writes in TechCrunch, "Over the years, Druva has developed services for protecting and managing data and tools for governance and compliance. Today, it took that idea one step further when it added ransomware and anomaly detection.

The company decided to develop a ransomware detection tool after finding that customers were using Druva to help manage the ransomware recovery process. Restoring data has always been a Druva strength, and it made sense to put the two together, CEO Jaspreet Singh explained."

"We saw a bunch of customers use the whole notion of data management for malware/ ransomware recovery. Our customers had a malware/ransomware tool and us as recovery, but putting the two together was challenging," Singh told TechCrunch.

Centrify Analytics Service Stops Breaches in Real-time Based on User Behavior
New solution uses machine learning to assess risk and provide real-time, actionable access decisions
Centrify, the leader in securing hybrid enterprises through the power of identity services, today announced the release of its new Analytics Service. This new service uses machine learning to assess risk based on constantly-evolving user behavior patterns. It then assigns a risk score, and enforces an appropriate decision - determining whether the user's access is granted, requires step-up authentication, or is blocked entirely.

According to a new Forrester study, commissioned by Centrify, an astonishing two-thirds of organizations experienced an average of five security breaches in the past two years. And billions of usernames and passwords have been stolen and made available for these types of attacks, increasing risk of further breaches. The power of these attacks is in their perfect camouflage. Attackers "look" just like legitimate users, raising no suspicion, since all IT sees is regular user activity.

Centrify Identity Service Named Most Innovative Identity and Access Management Solution in the 2017 Cyber Defense Magazine InfoSec Awards
                                  Centrify, February 16th, 2017
Centrify, the leader in securing hybrid enterprises through the power of identity services, today announced that Cyber Defense Magazine, the industry's leading electronic information security magazine and media partner of the RSA Conference 2017, has named Centrify Identity Service the Most Innovative Identity and Access Management Solution in its 2017 InfoSec Awards.

"This award validates Centrify's dedication to delivering innovative security solutions, which is critical in the new age of access," said Bill Mann, chief product officer, Centrify. "The modern enterprise can no longer rely on traditional perimeter security. With the rapid introduction of new technologies, platforms, applications and practices, Centrify stops breaches by securing each user's access to apps and infrastructure in today's boundaryless hybrid enterprise."

Centrify's Onsite RSA Survey Reveals Almost Half of Respondents Lack Confidence in Their Company's Cybersecurity Strategies
Organizations need to employ Identity and Access Management best practices
Centrify, the leader in securing hybrid enterprises through the power of identity services, announced the results from an onsite survey of IT professionals attending the RSA Conference, being held this week at Moscone Center, San Francisco. The survey asked IT professionals how their companies secure applications and infrastructure in the age of access, and it revealed that a startling number lacked confidence in their own organization's corporate security.

Organizations spend $75B on security, yet Centrify-commissioned Forrester study reveals 83 percent are at high risk, and being breached at an alarming rate
Centrify, the leader in securing hybrid enterprises through the power of identity services, commissioned a new Forrester study that revealed the enterprise security industry is failing, with organizations being breached at an alarming rate. The study found an astonishing two-thirds of organizations experienced an average of five or more security breaches in the past two years, and hackers compromised more than one billion identities in 2016 alone.

"Cybersecurity breaches are causing more havoc and affecting more industries than ever before," said Tom Kemp, CEO of Centrify. "Despite over $75 billion spent on cybersecurity in 2016, the products and services from major security companies have failed to stop breaches from occurring, and in fact, the problem is getting worse. This clearly indicates that traditional approaches are flat out not working in this age of access."
