Outsourcing is experiencing rapid growth to address the changes of its customer-base. Its sales for the period ending December 31, 2015 reached a record high 80.8 billion Yen, and it has grown by 36 percent year-after-year. Top 4 CMO Priorities For 2017
By Michael Hickins
Michael writes in Forbes, "And chief information officers thought they had it bad? The joke used to be that CIO stands for 'career is over,' but I'm not sure what the joke CMO acronym might be, other than 'clean my office out.' Executive search firm Spencer Stuart puts the average tenure of chief marketing officers at 44 months - barely more than three years.

Indeed, when much is given, much is expected. CMOs are now awash in customer data, and that's supposed to be pure gold, with no panning necessary. And while CIOs are struggling with flat or diminishing IT budgets, CMOs seem to have a license to print money for marketing automation technology. No wonder the clash of hyped-up expectations and cold, hard reality is giving CMOs headaches..."

2 Technical Choices By Oracle That Reveal Its Cloud Infrastructure Strategy
By Chris Murphy, Oracle, February 8th, 2017
Chris writes in Forbes, "Oracle's investments in its infrastructure-as-a-service architecture, especially as they apply to helping companies move existing data center workloads into the cloud, reveal where Oracle expects to differentiate its IaaS offerings from those of Amazon Web Services.

Why should business or government leaders care about this technical differentiation? "They'll try to move their stuff to other clouds, and they'll find out they can't move it," says Clay Magouyrk, vice president of engineering for Oracle's cloud infrastructure service and a former Amazon engineer. "This is why they should care."..."

Surviving And Thriving In The Digital Economy: A Platform Approach
By Chuck Hollis, February 6th, 2017
Chuck Hollis writes in Forbes, "Much has been written about the digital transformation of individual corporate functions: marketing, sales, human resources, customer experience, and so on. I find that view far too limiting.

In the digital economy, the whole is more important than the individual pieces. A successful digital enterprise is one whose departments and functions are more connected and integrated than those that came before..."

State Of The CIO 2017: The New Reality
CIO, February 7th, 2017
"The CIO role is integral to today's increasingly digital businesses, but transformational IT executives aren't necessarily shedding their functional responsibilities - get used to it...

As technology grabs the lead role in modern business, all eyes are on the CIO's ability to lead initiatives that radically transform how companies sell products, reach customers and drive opportunities for new revenue streams. At the same time, the digital era's wholesale dependence on technology means there's little room for the slightest hiccup in operations -- resulting in another mandate on the CIO's agenda..."

Data Breaches Affect All Parts Of Business, Verizon Report Shows

IT And C-Level Leaders Point Fingers At Each Other Over Cyber Defense
      ComputerWorld, February 9th, 2017
"IT managers say a cyber attack will cost double what their bosses estimate, new poll finds...

IT managers disagree with chief executives over who is responsible for a cyber security breach, according to a survey released Thursday.

The survey -- of a group of 221 chief executive officers and other C-level executives and another group of 984 IT decision makers -- found that each group largely believes the other group is responsible in the event of a breach.

In the survey, 35% of C-level respondents said IT teams would be responsible in a breach, while 50% of IT leaders think that responsibility rests with their senior managers..."

      Enterprise IT: The Year Ahead

"Partnerships and cooperation between service providers and organisations will be the key to success this year.

Investment in new IT is booming. Gartner estimates that global IT spending this year will total $3.5 trillion - a 2.7 per cent increase from 2016.

Increased spending, however, is only part of what we can expect in the enterprise IT landscape. As well as the question of spending priorities, both external and industry developments will test organisations and their service providers this year..."

Building The Predictive Enterprise: What CIOs Should Tell CEOs About A.I.

"Artificial intelligence is a powerful technology that can turn your organization into a predictive enterprise. But CIOs need to work with their CEOs to clarify the business case for A.I. instead of rushing headlong into the A.I. revolution...

By now we have all heard the buzz. Siri has plenty of company. Alexa and Google have invaded the home. Tesla's artificial intelligence is, well, driving itself. Google's Deep Mind is running the company's multi-billion-dollar search business. Even they don't know how it works - it just does. IBM's Watson has its own office and is predicting cancer treatments for real patients. You can't even date online without artificial intelligence (A.I.) hooking you up..."

Machines Can Replace Millions Of Bureaucrats

The recent McKinsey report on the future of jobs estimates the automation potential of administrative jobs at just 39 percent, far less than the 73 percent potential for accommodation and food services.

And yet the public sector is one of the biggest potential arenas for such displacement -- and one in which most people wouldn't mind seeing more automation. The reason it's barely happening now is largely, and predictably, an absence of political will..."

But it is also possible to construct more elaborate setups with multiple masters and chained setups. ClusterControl 1.4 takes advantage of this flexibility and gives you possibility to deploy multimaster setups. In this blog post, we will look at a couple of different setups and how they would be used in real-life situations..."

Linux, virtualization and of course Docker have become the key foundational elements for these next generation Cloud Native application architectures, whether deployed on-premise or in the public cloud.

We've had some exciting announcements here too in the Virtualization and Linux teams with more to come. Evernote decided last year that it wanted to move away from running its own data centers and start using the public cloud to operate its popular note-taking service. On Wednesday, it announced that the lion's share of the work is done, save for some last user attachments.

The company signed up to work with Google, and as part of the migration process, the tech titan sent a team of engineers (in one case, bearing doughnuts) over to work with Evernote to make sure the process was a success..."

"2016 data shows that phishing scams involving brands like Google and DropBox will soon overtake scams involving financial companies, PhishLabs says.

For all the sophisticated tactics, techniques, and procedures employed by threat actors these days, phishing continued to be the top attack vector in 2016, as it has been for some time.

The big difference was that instead of targeting financial services companies, phishers increasingly targeted cloud storage service providers like Google and DropBox, security vendor PhishLabs said in a voluminous report on phishing trends released this week..."

"When the notion of cloud computing first arose, there was a lot of talk about how wonderful it was to have an affordable, manageable 'secondary' data center available in the case of an emergency. Enterprises are no strangers to the need to have a secondary, or backup, data center as a means to address potential disasters. Many have them, but in the wake of cloud, some have migrated from owning their own to renting one in the cloud. For those who were just growing to the point they needed such a disaster recovery option, many turned immediately to cloud because why would you invest in a physical data center when there was a veritable smorgasbord of options available in the form of cloud computing?..."

Big Data offers big advantages, but getting to the starting line can be problematic. Many projects run into hurdles just trying to access and load the data that will fuel key insights. Progress has started to emerge after a series of data center outages and other IT-related troubles during the past year that caused a turbulent ride for airline passengers.

The recovery time for Delta Air Lines Inc.'s outage at the end of January was shorter than the one last year, said Mark Thomas Jaggers, a research director at analyst firm Gartner who focuses on disaster recovery (DR) and IT resilience..."

So from that point of view, we may as well look back at 2017 and tell you how it all went down and why. Thus, here is my '2017 Data Center Year in Review,' with ten byte-sized inevitable outcomes..."

According to a study by TEKsystems, 81 percent of IT leaders say it's difficult to find quality candidates, and almost half don't expect to fill an IT position within the anticipated time frame. There are consensus-driven definitions of what exactly log analysis is, but a simplified, accessible explanation might be: to organize log entries into a human-friendly display and make business decisions based on what you learn...

There's been a lot of talk about security fatigue lately, in the press and in my office. It's a term that people get right away, and it feels like one of the classic social phenomena of our era, like multitasking or that phantom buzz in your pocket.

If security fatigue is the disease we've all got (even security pros!), the question is how do we get over it? In fact, ransomware emerged as the fastest-growing malware across all industries in 2016, with major increases seen at technology companies, energy and utility companies and banking organisations. As a result, we do not expect ransomware to slow down anytime soon, and seeing as its on track to be a $1 billion crime in 2017, it is still paying significant dividends for attackers..."

Based on attack volume, cloud storage nearly surpassed financial institutions as the most phished industry in 2016. If current trends continue, attacks targeting cloud storage providers will outpace all others in 2017. This is a monumental shift from historic trends that reflects a prominent expansion of how phishers profit. Not only does this shift impact those targeted by phishing attacks directly, it also impacts any organization that relies on email addresses and passwords to authenticate their users..."

"Users want answers to burning questions, but IT and the data team can't tackle them all at once. Self-service analytics help organizations triage problem-solving by providing many of the insights business users need.

Lines of business are buying their own analytics solutions because IT is unable to deliver what they need fast enough. If the company has a data team, lines of business can ask for help, but like IT, the data team is faced with address more problems than there are people to solve them..."

"Today, employee mobility and office BYOD programs are critical for enterprise productivity. Mobile devices add new security challenges, bypassing many of the security controls you have in place. Mobile devices, mobile apps and the networks they use are now essential to satisfy customers, collaborate more effectively with suppliers, and keep employees productive anytime and anywhere.

Functions to realize smooth web application development with expanded design information and test automation
Fujitsu announced that it has enhanced features of the Professional Edition of FUJITSU Software INTARFRM, an application framework that supports customer system development. Sales of INTARFRM Professional Edition V16 in Japan began February 7.

INTARFRM is an application framework that can manage development resources across the whole lifecycle of software, from design to development, operations, and maintenance. Now, with the addition of continuous integration (CI) support functionality that makes it easier to connect with commonly distributed CI tools to improve the efficiency of web application development, it is possible to automate the building (creating executable files), deployment (creating a situation where they can be used), and testing (testing how it looks and operates on the screen) of web applications, which previously had to be done manually. This makes it possible to automatically repeat tests for applications in development, enabling users to find bugs faster, improve quality, and shorten delivery times.

VMware announced that AeroData, Inc., has implemented a secure, highly available multi-site software-defined data center (SDDC) based on VMware solutions to deliver flight data access for more than 21,000 flights in North America every day. The resulting SDDC environment -- which includes VMware NSX, VMware vSAN, VMware vSphere and VMware vRealize Log Insight - provides AeroData more efficient and effective security management, higher levels of application availability and continuity, and according to AeroData, the company's SDDC environment has reduced costs by at least 50 percent.

AeroData's flight deck client-server application is the last application used by pilots before the aircraft entry door is closed. The company knows first-hand that just five minutes of system downtime can result in more than 100 delayed flights, a significant loss of revenue, and damage to its customers' reputations.

Druva, the leader in cloud data protection and information management, today announced new monitoring and detection capabilities designed to proactively alert organizations to suspicious data activities triggered by potentially malicious threats. With these new enhancements, Druva's data protection platform now offers enterprises a comprehensive solution to manage business data threats, like ransomware, from detection to recovery.

Ransomware is one of the most pressing security issues facing today's enterprises and one of the highest priorities for IT to address. The U.S. Department of Justice has reported that an average of 4,000 ransomware attacks occur in the United States each day. As the proliferation of ransomware continues, enterprises must contain and mitigate attacks with data management and information governance strategies that bring greater visibility into data anomalies.

Traditionally, organizations have relied on a well-defined boundary to protect their assets. But now, a different security reality has set in as the border has disintegrated. Companies are experiencing breaches at an alarming rate, resulting in significant exposure for global enterprises.

There is no one-size-fits-all security solution to address the threat landscape today's businesses face. Each organization has unique security obstacles and obligations. Billions of dollars have been invested into IT security solutions and increasing annual security budgets has been an imperative. In fact, 98% of business respondents reported they will spend over a million dollars in 2017, per a global study by Citrix and the Ponemon Institute. However, many of the systems and people in place are still not able to handle today's threats.

Security threats increase as more devices crowd networks and as people have more freedom to work from anywhere, on any device. More devices, especially bring your own (BYO) devices are the new norm, and businesses need to put information security at the top of their priority list to ensure apps and data are secure no matter where they reside or are accessed. On top of this, businesses need skilled staff to plan how they will reduce risk and improve the security of their applications and data.

What IT challenges were you facing before Nutanix?

We have a large Citrix VDI environment with over 1,500 desktops. That deployment was mixed with our production environment on our existing blade chassis and SAN storage infrastructure. When we started seeing degradation in performance on the VDI side, we realized it was time to refresh our CPU and memory environment. We also wanted to separate our production servers and storage from the VDI environment in order to commoditize the VDI pieces. So we decided to run a bake-off between Nutanix hyperconverged systems and HP to determine the right solution for us.

Palo Alto Networks announced advancements to its Next-Generation Security Platform that extend the ability for customer organizations to safely enable applications, prevent successful cyberattacks, simplify security operations, and safely embrace the cloud.

Cyber adversaries often use commoditized compute power and automated tools and evasion techniques to deploy sophisticated attacks at massive scale and little cost. Security teams can find themselves struggling to address the sophistication, speed and volume of these threats - both known and unknown - using a collection of legacy security point products, manual resources and tools that fail to provide thorough application visibility and control, can't adequately identify and stop advanced attacks in an automated and timely manner, complicate security workflows, and require too much manual intervention.

Palo Alto Networks announced availability of new purpose-built hardware and virtual next-generation firewall appliances that safely enable applications and redefine security performance for both threat prevention and SSL decryption, enabling customers to safely embrace the cloud and prevent successful cyberattacks across network, endpoint and cloud environments.

The new models complement enhancements to the Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Security Platform PAN-OS operating system version 8.0, also introduced today, which includes more than 70 new features that deliver threat and credential theft prevention, secure cloud enablement, and more.

As organizations look to modernize their physical data centers, embrace hybrid cloud environments, and apply advanced security measures across their infrastructure, they require greater performance to handle the tremendous amount of traffic generated by the growing number of users, applications and devices. The introduction of new SaaS applications running at higher throughputs further increases demand for bandwidth performance to and from the network.

Security demands have evolved as new requirements and risks have been introduced, especially as organizations expand their IT architecture from traditional networks and data centers to private and public or hybrid cloud deployments. Add SaaS application usage to the mix, and the need to secure all these architectures against ever-increasing, sophisticated threats and adversary techniques being used to gain access to assets and data regardless of where they are located - the network, in the cloud, or in SaaS applications - and organizations have a multitude of complex security and operational challenges to address in order to prevent cyber breaches and achieve the cloud speed and agility promise.

Skyhawk PCIe SSDs are optimized to give customers the ideal balance of fast and consistent performance, cost-effect storage and Quality of Service (QoS) to address large, unstructured data center workloads for cloud environments....

In many new applications, data will live its entire lifespan in the Cloud. Created, managed, analyzed, acted upon and archived there. In fact, it has been reported that some analysts predict worldwide public-cloud spending in 2020 could be essentially double of that in 2016.

Whether cloud computing or cloud services, economics is a strong lure for some. For these companies, the Cloud is simply more cost effective and efficient for running applications and storing data.

So how do cloud providers keep up with the growing demand economically? How do cloud storage services offer high availability and consistent I/O performance delivered 24/7, 365 days a year?..."

When we think of IoT we usually don't look beyond small, connected devices. But when I look at IoT, I see three core components:

                                                              • The user facing devices (hardware)
                                                              • Data centers running services for these devices
                                                              • Software running on these devices

It should not come as a surprise that Linux is a dominant player in the latter two categories. Most data centers and cloud, irrespective of whether its public cloud or private cloud, run on Linux. Most IoT devices run some form of Linux based operating system..."
