Artificial Intelligence Examples: 20 AI Shaping Your Life
AI examples abound. It's very likely that you've interacted with artificial intelligence today without even realizing it.
"To many people, artificial intelligence (AI) seems like a futuristic - and possibly frightening - concept. But the truth is that many Web services and technology companies have been quietly building AI capabilities into their products for some time. In fact, if you've been online or used a mobile device today, you probably encountered an AI, perhaps without realizing it.

People use the term artificial intelligence to describe a wide range of different capabilities. In general, however, it refers to computers that think and learn in ways similar to humans. As one example of AI, many of today's AI systems have natural language processing capabilities, which means that they can understand spoken or typewritten words the way humans typically use them. Instead of requiring inputs in a particular format, they can answer ordinary questions, like "What will the weather be like today?" or 'What is the capital of Venezuela?'..."

She just wrapped up an AMA and you should read it.

SF Linux Users /TechTalk Summit - Creating A Secure Linux Server - Live Demo
          Tuesday, January 20, 2017 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
This month, the SF Linux Users Group topic will be "Creating A Secure Linux Server" - a live demo. We'll hold the meeting in conjunction with a TechTalk Summit event in Boca. In February, we'll be back at NSU.

I'll start with a newly provisioned Linux server in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. We'll leverage the new Lightsail Virtual Private Server (VPS) service from Amazon. For $5/month, you can have a VPS with 512 MB Memory, 1 Core Processor, 20 GB SSD Disk and 1 TB Transfer. That's the smallest of 5 "No-nonsense pricing" servers.

I'll have a laptop hooked up to a projector so that the audience can see the steps taken.

          • Install and update linux
          • Apply linux hardening best practice
          • Set up a DNS entry (I use Godaddy and I have registered the domain
          • Configure a few apps such as apache, MySQL and wordpress

We'll leave the system running and I'll ask FLUX members to take a stab at breaching the new server over the next month and in the February meeting we'll review and address the results!

          Joint Meeting

This will be a joint meeting with TechTalk Summits. They had already planned this event for Boca Raton and they have graciously invited us to join them. They will be picking up the tab for food and drinks.

They have four sponsors for Tuesday's event: Zero, Rubrik, Veeam, and Tegile. Each will give a brief (15 minute), followed by a break then the Linux Demo.

"January 2017: 31 days of 'new year, new you' posts and gym selfies, clean slate musings and big promises of starting over. But here at C3Workplace, we're all about getting back to business. We know it's not about starting over, but upping the ante. It's about making this year better than the last.

                A Quick Guide to Typography
                Business 2 Community, January 12th, 2017
"Typography is arguably the most important part of any design because it carries the overall message. It is also important for the digital marketer to understand and communicate the typography goals of the client, and because many clients have no formal training in typography, it could be difficult for them to explain what they are looking for. This is a brief guide to the world of typography, which tries to bridge the gap between client and marketer..."
HDMI 2.1: What you need to know
                  CNET, January 12th, 2017
"A new version of HDMI is coming soon, and there are some big changes -- including support for resolutions up to 10K as well as a new cable. Here's the skinny on fatter AV bandwidth...

OK, let's get this done up front. Yes, there's a new cable with HDMI 2.1, but you don't need to upgrade. At least not yet.

HDMI 2.1 brings new features and a lot more bandwidth to the venerable cable and connection. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the main audio/video connection for TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, video streamers, sound bars, computers and more. It carries both video and audio in one cable, allows digital encryption, and generally delivers perfect video and audio quality without any degradation.

Today's devices mostly use HDMI version 2.0, but in 2018, many will likely transition to version 2.1. How does that affect you? Not much. You can't upgrade your current TV to 2.1 spec, but in reality, you won't need to. This update is quite forward-thinking and takes into account formats and resolutions that won't be widely available for years..."

As we'll need to wait another six months or so for the annual State of DevOps Report to emerge from the good folks over at DORA and IT Revolution, which forces us to take stock of the situation using other resources. The Impact of Swapping on MySQL Performance
                  By Peter Zaitsev , January 13th, 2017
Peter blogs, "In this blog, I'll look at the impact of swapping on MySQL performance.

It's common sense that when you're running MySQL (or really any other DBMS) you don't want to see any I/O in your swap space. Scaling the cache size (using innodb_buffer_pool_size in MySQL's case) is standard practice to make sure there is enough free memory so swapping isn't needed.

But what if you make some mistake or miscalculation, and swapping happens? How much does it really impact performance? This is exactly what I set out to investigate..."

                  Network World, January 9th, 2017
"Our organization, like most large public bodies, is locked into formal bureaucratic procedures and, by general standards, is highly risk-averse. In addition, like other organizations of the United Nations System, it has a unique attribute which makes moving to the cloud a much greater leap than for most other organizations: UN System organizations enjoy a special status.

In the aftermath of World War II, countries negotiating the Charter for the future United Nations agreed the organization should be in a position to function without interference from any single Member State. For this reason, a regime of privileges and immunities was developed. It is this special legal regime that ensures UN organizations are immune from the jurisdiction of national courts, that their premises cannot be entered by national enforcement agencies without their consent, and that their archives - including their data - cannot be accessed without their agreement..."

How To Build a Private Storage Cloud
Search Cloud Storage, January 10th, 2017
"Building internal cloud storage must account for elasticity, choosing the right platform, allowing for workflow, and stack deployments and public cloud integration.

The delivery of storage as a service has advanced considerably over the years. Today, public clouds like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure offer object storage on demand for internal and external connectivity, as well as block and file storage for internal assignment to compute instances. This operational flexibility would be highly attractive in the data center, offering convenience and agility well beyond traditional methods of storage deployment..."

Selecting the proper hybrid cloud management tools is not easy since there's a level of hype surrounding them, and the tools available are still new and evolving rapidly. The adage about what happens when people make assumptions is one that many in security would be wise to recall. Worse than making a donkey of themselves, security practitioners that make assumptions put the enterprise at risk.

Andrey Pozhogin, cybersecurity expert at Kaspersky Lab, said thinking they're protected from DDoS attacks is one of the most dangerous assumptions businesses make..."

The most common objection I come across when discussing Disaster Recovery (DR) is, 'Oh, well we don't get hurricanes or floods or anything like that, so we don't need DR'.

"Despite the redundancy and resilience the enterprise has gained from virtualization and cloud computing, disaster recovery remains one of the most overlooked functions on the IT to-do list.

In many cases, organizations have established backup and recovery services for their primary applications, but without constant care and attention to the processes behind B&R, and the way they are affected by constantly evolving data loads and architectures, the reliability of these services is questionable at best. In the digital economy, it's not enough to recover - you must recover quickly and thoroughly..."

Reading about software-defined networking and network functions virtualization these days almost seems to be an exercise in contradictions. Some articles tout explosive progress in SDN and NFV deployments, while others say operators are losing confidence that either technology will really address their current and future needs. Clearly, some operators are more successful with SDN and NFV technologies than others. Why? More importantly, do some operators have special insight into these technologies that the rest of the industry needs to learn?..."

What is the difference between the TCP/IP model and the OSI model?

The Open Systems Interconnection, or OSI, model is a standard reference model created by the International Organization for Standardization to describe how the different software and hardware components involved in a network communication should divide labor and interact with one another. It defines a seven-layer set of functional elements, ranging from the physical interconnections at Layer 1 -- also known as the physical layer, or PHY interface -- all the way up to Layer 7, the application layer..."

Studies continue to show that insider threats are a big risk to companies' data protection efforts. But despite these well-known, highly publicized threats, corporate leadership often does not do enough to set the right information protection tone in their organizations, according to Grace Buckler, founder of privacy consulting firm The Privacy Advocate LLC. During the recent ISSA International Conference in Dallas, Buckler led a session where she discussed why the attitude of business leadership will have a direct effect on company efforts to improve information privacy. In this Q&A conducted at the conference, Buckler explains why a company's privacy breach prevention efforts are heavily contingent on company culture, and the potential costly repercussions if data security is ignored at the leadership level.

Why is a security leader's attitude so important to ensure enterprise information security and privacy?..."

"French workers now have the right to opt out of emails after set working hours. But does restricting access to communication hamper rather than improve employee engagement?

New laws came into force in France on January 1, which gave employees the choice of whether to open and respond to emails outside their normal working hours.

The 'right to disconnect', part of a portfolio of new labour laws which have sparked protests across the country, aims, among other things, to prevent burnout.

For consistency, the type of message we are publishing will be based on a canonical schema. Despite Living a Digital Life, 98 Percent of Generation Z Still Shop In-Store
                                              IBM, January 12th, 2017
Despite expectations that the first "digitally native" generation would want to shop online, a new study released by IBM and the National Retail Federation found that almost all members of Generation Z prefer to shop in bricks-and-mortar stores. With the global Gen Z population set to reach 2.6 billion by 2020, retailers need to create more interactive engagement around their brands to serve the "always on," mobile-focused, high-spending demographic, according to the study.

"Generation Z expects technology to be intuitive, relevant and engaging - their last great experience is their new expectation," IBM General Manager of Global Consumer Industries Steve Laughlin said. "This presents a significant challenge for retailers and brands to create a personalized, interactive experience with the latest digital advances or risk falling behind. This kind of innovation is not linear or a one-time project - it is a new way of thinking, operating and behaving."
