Artificial Intelligence Vs. Machine Learning: What's The Difference?
Datamation, October 12th, 2016
"During the past few years, the terms artificial intelligence and machine learning have begun showing up frequently in technology news and websites. Often the two are used as synonyms, but many experts argue that they have subtle but real differences.

And of course, the experts sometimes disagree among themselves about what those differences are.

In general, however, two things seem clear: first, the term artificial intelligence (AI) is older than the term machine learning (ML), and second, most people consider machine learning to be a subset of artificial intelligence..."

            ComputerWorld, October 13th, 2016

Seagate on Tuesday announced two new BarraCuda drives-one of which now holds the record for being the largest-capacity 2.5-inch drive.

The BarraCuda ST5000 pushes the capacity limit from the previous 4TB to 5TB, and will be priced around $85. Seagate says the drive uses the company's 1TB-per-platter design that it unveiled at CES in January 2016. The same drive is also available in 4TB and 3TB models.

All are 5,400rpm drives with 128MB of cache and a two-year warranty. Power consumption is rated at 2.1 watts under load and 1.1 watts while idle..."

Certifying Software: Why We're Not There Yet
                Dark Reading, October 12th, 2016
"Finding a solution to the software security and hygiene problem will take more than an Underwriter's Lab seal of approval.

There's no arguing with the fact that acquirers of software need assurances that the software they purchase is safe and stable to use. However, I struggle with the notion that analyzing software and assigning a pass/fail rating is the best solution, given that many state-of-the-art software assurance tools, technologies and capabilities have not kept pace with the complexity and size of modern software. Of particular concern to me are the challenges in performance, precision, and soundness of many static analysis tools, both open-source and commercial..."

Why Oracle Cloud Is A Better Choice Than AWS Or Azure
                  By Margaret Lindquist
Margaret writes in Forbes, "Oracle is more than just a technology provider - it is a trusted advisor that can help businesses transition their IT stack to the cloud and take the greatest possible advantage of that move.

Customers' biggest requirement is the need for choice, said Oracle Vice President of Cloud Platform Ashish Mohindroo during an Oracle OpenWorld 2016 session on digital disruption. 'People want to be able to work in a hybrid environment and move at their own pace. You need a cloud platform so you can create your own journey. And you need a path. Every customer follows their own personalized path to the cloud...'"

This includes both insecure and secure cloud apps and services that employees and business units are increasingly adopting without ITs knowledge or oversight - a movement known as Shadow IT. Today, every department from accounting to engineering is stealthily adopting these cloud services, causing serious problems for IT professionals who have to then quickly gain visibility and control over these services. A Breach Alone Means Liability

"Usually someone must suffer injury for a company to be held liable in a security breach. Now, a breach alone is enough...

Rich Santalesa, a programmer turned writer and lawyer, brought an interesting turn of events to my attention last week. We need to pay heed:

A litigant can have standing in a U.S. Federal breach case where no personal fraud or identity theft has yet occurred.

Usually, a litigant has to have suffered injury - breech caused them identity theft or other fraudulent activity based upon information released in a security breach.

This means if you're cracked, you can be liable if personally identifiable information is released, exfiltrated, absconded, whatever. It also means that should you believe the axiom that currently most of us are hacked, we're in for a litigious treat...

Savvy business owners know that it is no longer only a matter of protecting your data, but also of saving your business. Clients and customers depend on the availability of your business systems and applications, and any amount of downtime is dangerous to your business's reputation - as well as to your business itself. Software-Defined Networking (SDN): What Businesses Need To Know
                          ITProPortal, October 10th, 2016
"The ever-increasing reach of cloud computing is resulting in more and more businesses adopting as-a-service models...

As more and more systems move to the cloud, so we're becoming increasingly used to accessing all systems on an as-a-service model. Networking is no exception to this and by using software-defined networking businesses can break away from the restrictions imposed by old, inflexible static network architecture.

SDN allows companies to master the complex nature of their networks and have a single point of control. At the same time it opens up the possibility of automating network management to allow it to cope with fluctuations in traffic and demand..."

"More mobile services will start sharing spectrum, so your speeds could vary more

The long fight over LTE networks sharing frequencies with Wi-Fi may be just the first of many battles as device makers and service providers try to make the most of the limited available spectrum.

Around the world, regulators and industry are working on how to let different kinds of networks use the same spectrum. The new techniques and policies they use should lead to better mobile performance in some areas, but it's also likely that wireless performance will fluctuate more as you move around..."

There is no doubt that the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) market is evolving quickly.

In the report 'Digital Transformation - an Internet of Things perspective', IDC predicts that the installed base of IoT endpoints will grow from less than 13 billion units at the end of 2015 to 30 billion by 2020..."

Here are 7 factors that can make a big difference when building your big data architecture...

Big data is a big part of many enterprise IT operations today. According to an IDC forecast, it will be $187 billion big by 2019. It's a critical part of the analysis that forms the basis of both machine and human business intelligence and decision-making. Since it's obvious that you can't have any sort of data -- big, little, or exactly right -- without some sort of infrastructure, it's worth taking a look at some of the factors that go into building a successful big data architecture..."

                                      PC World, October 11th, 2016
"Researchers warn about the use of standardized or hard-coded primes in existing cryptosystems...

Researchers warn that many 1024-bit keys used to secure communications on the internet today might be based on prime numbers that have been intentionally backdoored in an undetectable way.

Many public-key cryptography algorithms that are used to secure web, email, VPN, SSH and other types of connections on the internet derive their strength from the mathematical complexity of discrete logarithms -- computing discrete logarithms for groups of large prime numbers cannot be efficiently done using classical methods. This is what makes cracking strong encryption computationally impractical..."

Microsoft inadvertently proved why Apple's firm stance against unlocking an iPhone that belonged to one of the San Bernardino terrorists was the correct one. Apple's decision renewed the argument over how best to help law enforcement agencies ensure our collective security without violating an individual's right to privacy. Actually, that debate overshadowed a key reason why encryption backdoors are a bad idea - eventually, they will be discovered by the wrong people..."

                                      ComputerWorld, October 11th, 2016
"Tape storage has been declared dead so many times that it has become a trope in technology journalism. The truth is more complicated and is ultimately less about tape's demise than it is about the steady encroachment of cloud services...

Much like the mainframe, tape still has its place. It's a veteran technology that is heralded for being cheap, reliable and simple, and advancements continue. Even so, by the time you've invested in tape robots for automation and verification steps to make sure your backup actually captured your data, all that labor and infrastructure means tape isn't as cheap as the per-megabyte costs make it look..."

IBM Redefines Security, Availability and Economics of Storing Data in the Hybrid Cloud
Company delivers new IBM Cloud Object Storage service, industry's first object storage service for hybrid clouds
IBM is introducing a new cloud object storage service that redefines the security, availability and economics of storing, managing and accessing massive amounts of digital information across hybrid clouds. The company's breakthrough new IBM Cloud Object Storage offering derives from IBM's acquisition of Cleversafe and its significant portfolio of patents which are designed to deliver clients better value with industry-leading security.

Though organizations are flocking to the cloud for improved efficiencies and IT agility, clients see a gap in their ability to store increasingly larger volumes of data - on premises and off premises. Presently companies have to choose between storing data on internal servers and storage systems, or in the cloud. It's a dilemma that has hindered business flexibility and raised infrastructure costs. As data volumes continue to grow across industries, the need to create flexible hybrid cloud storage solutions has intensified.

Fujitsu Develops Technology to Automatically Extract Business Specifications in Programs
First-in-industry tech supports digital transformations, such as the migration of existing large-scale systems to the cloud, by more efficiently grasping business specifications
Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. announced the development of technology to analyze the programs of business systems, and automatically extract implemented business logic-based practices, calculation methods and other easy-to-understand tables.

When migrating or rebuilding business systems, an essential first step before beginning design and development work is to understand the currently implemented system specifications, but in many cases where a business system has continually grown in scale and complexity through years of development, specification documents have not been updated, and a great deal of time is required for preparation.

With technology that divides large-scale programs and extracts the business specifications in table form, and technology that rebuilds a table for the whole program from the separated tables, it is now possible to automatically extract business specifications implemented in large-scale programs as an easy-to-understand tables of conditions, increasing the efficiency of grasping the current specifications coded in the program.

Holidays a Boon for Hackers as Much as Retailers
                                        Level(3), October 11th, 2016
The holiday season brings opportunity for retailers - and for hackers looking to invade retail networks, disrupt systems and steal valuable information. To help defend against these threats, Level 3 Communications is releasing comprehensive omnichannel security best practices for retailers heading into the 2016 shopping season.

                                        Top Takeaways for Retailers:

                                        • Retailers may be more vulnerable this holiday season due to the fact there are more access points for sophisticated cybercriminals to exploit across the omnichannel given the pervasiveness of highly distributed endpoints spanning kiosks, in-store Wi-Fi, mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) and the prevalence of IoT devices.
                                        • While Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance is an important piece of retailers' strategy, attackers are also invading networks to obtain valuable financial records, employee data, healthcare records and other personal identifiable information (PII), which can be used for phishing and social engineering. Retailers need to employ security measures beyond PCI DSS compliance to defend against these threats.

Open standards drive the IT industry's innovation engine. Today, a consortium called Gen-Z was unveiled which aims to develop a new universal interconnect that will enable simpler and more powerful computer architectures. The consortium includes industry leaders like Dell, HPE, Huawei and Samsung, among its founding members.

Gen-Z reminds me of the 1990s push for the Universal Serial Bus, which is now a regular feature of nearly every device imaginable: phones, PCs, televisions, even cars and IoT devices. USB was also an open standard to replace dedicated keyboard, mouse, serial and printer ports with a single, plug-and-play solution. We hope to see Gen-Z take the same path, be widely adopted and ignite a broad wave of innovation across the IT industry.

Australia's largest enterprise software company experiences significant savings and increased performance
NetApp announced that TechnologyOne (TechOne) has implemented NetApp Private Storage (NPS) on a FlexPod data centre platform with NetApp MetroCluster technology to help reduce costs and increase performance for its global customers.

TechOne is Australia's largest enterprise software company, with offices in six countries. The company's software powers its diverse range of customers, which includes more than 1,000 leading corporations, government departments, financial institutions, universities, and statutory authorities around the world.

After the floods in Queensland in 2011 damaged TechOne's data centre, the Brisbane- headquartered company decided to go all in with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to reduce risk. AWS did just that, allowing TechOne to have up to 99.9% resiliency. However, TechOne needed a storage solution that also provided the same levels of reliability and flexibility.
