To promote workstation sales and to make Sun workstations even more
appealing to software developers, Sun announced a 5-month promotion
targeting the Software Engineering groups of large corporate
organizations that create software for use internally -- what Sun often
refers to as in-house developers.
This bundle is available to U.S. customers through the SunStore web
site, at a non-discountable eAdvantage price of $2995 -- about half of
list price. This low promotional pricing allows Sun the opportunity to
grab share from NT system providers, such as Dell, Compaq, and others,
who don't provide Solaris development capabilities. The promotion
includes:
- A standard 360-MHz Sun Ultra 5 workstation with 128 MB of memory
- A SunPCi co-processor card
- A subscription to Sun Developer Essentials Software, Professional
Edition (which currently includes, as part of a Developer Group
promotion, a copy of Sun Visual WorkShop C++, Personal Edition)
No monitor is included with this offer.
This promotion will be particularly attractive to developers who need to
develop for both Microsoft Windows and Solaris, because the promotion
provides a single box capable of running both operating systems. The
promotional system will facilitate the development, testing, and
integration of complex software in heterogeneous real-life scenarios.
