AI May Soon Find and Patch a Software Bug Automatically
Search Security, March 7th, 2016
"The cybersecurity industry is getting closer to artificial intelligence that can find and patch software bugs automatically, but that same tech could lead to autonomous hacking...

At RSA Conference 2016 this week, Konstantinos Karagiannis, CTO of security consulting at BT America, said artificial intelligence is set to make a leap in the next 10 years, but it may be as soon as this summer that a software bug can be found and patched by autonomous programs..."

AI Advancement In Answering Questions About Text, Images
    Information Week, March 8th, 2016
"Slowly but surely, artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing. Where it stands in comparison to human intelligence is difficult to say because people excel across a broad set of intellectual tasks, while AI tends to be narrowly focused. But machines keep getting better at tasks like sifting through vast quantities of data, understanding natural language, and recognizing objects in images.

Over the weekend, scientists from a Silicon Valley company called MetaMind described their efforts to advance the state of the art in a research paper, 'Dynamic Memory Networks for Visual and Textual Question Answering'..."

Review: Azure Machine Learning is for Pros Only
    InfoWorld, March 9th, 2016
"Machine learning is an obvious complement to a cloud service that also handles big data. Often the major reason to collect massive amounts of observables is to predict other values of interest to the business. For example, one of the reasons to collect massive numbers of anonymized credit card transactions is to predict whether a new transaction is valid or fraudulent with some likelihood..."

DeepMind's stunning victories over Go legend Lee Se-dol have stoked excitement over artificial intelligence's potential more than any event in recent memory. But the Google subsidiary's AlphaGo program is far from its only project - it's not even the main one. As co-founder Demis Hassabis said earlier in the week, DeepMind wants to 'solve intelligence,' and he has more than a few ideas about how to get there..."

For more conservative users, and for enterprise deployments, TDF suggests the 'still' version: LibreOffice 5.0.5. For enterprise deployments, The Document Foundation suggests the backing of professional support by certified people..

I was listening to Smooth Radio when Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror" came on. I had never realized before - what a great IT Project Manager he would have made!

The song's all about clear messages (communication and vision) and getting it right while you've got the time (deadlines) but also "if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make the change!" I love that last bit..."

5 Ways Agile Project Management is Like Running a Marathon
                    Business 2 Community, March 12th, 2016
"It took me just shy of 48 years, but I finally ran my first half-marathon on February 7, 2016 (Super Bowl Sunday - Go Broncos). I had extra 'Lifetime Bucks' from Lifetime Fitness that were about to expire, so I used them to buy a run plan. The coach sat me down, told me to pick a race as a goal, and suggested a 10k as a starting point. I've run that distance in under an hour several times, so I picked the half-marathon to really challenge me. I had never run more than 8 miles in a single session previously, but I wanted to learn more about endurance running.

I had plenty of time to think while pounding out 300+ miles on my run plan, and that gave me the idea: Agile Project Management is Like Running a Marathon! Consider these five comparisons:.."

The Data Center Journal, March 7th, 2016
"More is being asked of the network than ever before. Without a significant increase in network speeds, bottlenecks and poor performance will result. Industry professionals have been working hard to prove the viability of network functions virtualization (NFV) as part of the solution to the network-acceleration challenge.

Over the last three years, dozens of proof-of-concept (PoC) trials have proven that workloads can move to virtual environments running on standard hardware, and there are even examples of carrier deployments using NFV. This is all thanks to the work of visionary carriers and vendors who recognize the need for a drastic change in how carriers do business if they are to survive and thrive..."

Cloud-to-cloud data backup: How to pick your provider
                                    SearchDataBackup, March 11th, 2016
"From cost to a product's capabilities, there is a lot to assess when selecting the right cloud-to-cloud backup technology -- and provider -- for your organization.

One of the side effects to moving IT resources into the cloud is that backups often become more difficult. This is especially true for software as a service clouds, because it is generally impossible to back up these types of services in the same way an organization might back up local applications. Microsoft, for instance, will not allow Office 365 customers to install a backup agent onto its servers because the servers are shared among multiple tenants. In addition, there is always the chance a backup agent could impact a server's performance or stability..."

How enterprises will become more mobile in 2016
                                    Information Age, March 11th, 2016
"Evolving workforce trends have created the desire among employees for more opportunities to work and collaborate through their mobile devices. But are mobile collaboration strategies keeping up?

More employees are working outside the office today, using mobile devices to access data from applications and create new files from that data just as easily.

The challenge here is how to keep track of all that data over time. Are new files being saved centrally, or are they just living on laptops?"

"The Open Compute Project holds its summit in San Jose this week and the effort, which revolves around making data center components and designs more efficient and interoperable, has notched a few wins in its nearly 5-year history, but the real accomplishment revolves around influence.

OCP was announced in April 2011 out of Facebook's data center designs and when you run down the accomplishments there's one big conclusion to draw: OCP's major win is that it shifted the conversation about hardware, vendors and customers..."

Google said it joined the Open Compute Project, an initiative founded by the social-networking company five years ago to develop more affordable computer servers and standardize the technology. Of course, doing nothing runs the risk of being bypassed by others who do learn to innovate quickly. So, while some organizations are transforming, many others will soon realize that they are left with no choice..."

In addition, the survey found that security concerns are limiting the adoption of cloud and mobility solutions throughout organizations.

Respondents to the '2016 Upstream Oil and Gas Digital Trends Survey' included international oil companies (IOCs), national oil companies (NOCs), independents and oilfield services firms.

Over the next three to five years, 80 percent of upstream oil and gas companies plan to spend the same, more, or significantly more (30%, 36%, and 14%, respectively) on digital technologies as they do now, according to the survey, now in its fifth edition. This continued investment in digital is due to respondents' confidence that digital technologies can continue to help them drive leaner, smarter organizations.
