The Ultra 80 workstation, which can be configured with up to four processors and 4GB of memory, runs the most advanced graphics applications and today's larger datasets easily, and provides investment protection via support for Sun's next two generations of graphics. Technical computing users in the EDA, earth sciences, satellite imagery, MCAD and financial services industries can harness the raw power of this system to build, view and manipulate increasingly complex models, datasets and simulations. In addition, Sun continues to drive value by reducing prices on its popular Ultra 60 workstation by up to 18 percent and by building new features into Solaris desktop software.

Graphics Leadership Today and Tomorrow

The Ultra 80 system was designed to accommodate the company's next two generations of powerful graphics technologies. These future technologies, which will be introduced as early as calendar year 2000, will provide the building blocks through which Sun can deliver scalable, true, yet affordable, "human-scale" design functionality at performance levels well exceeding today's expensive super high-end graphics. The Ultra 80 workstation can support one or two of Sun's highest performance Sun Elite3D m6 graphics accelerators for real-time interactive 3D visualization, design and animation applications.

Flexing to Meet Users' Needs

With twice the memory and processor capacity of the Ultra 60 workstation, the Ultra 80 system complements the Ultra desktop family, satisfying users demand for new systems to meet the increasing need for more compute and memory intensive applications in the technical markets. The system's flexible design makes it ideal for both graphics- and compute-intensive applications because users can customize the system with more processors, memory, storage and graphics.

The new Ultra 80 workstation features up to four 450MHz UltraSPARC-II processors, up to 4GB of memory, and one or two Sun Elite3D graphics accelerators, as well as enhanced storage capacity and I/O performance via support for two 18.2GB/10,000 RPM ULTRA SCSI internal drives. Together these features provide users with investment protection and headroom to easily grow their computing environments.

Ultra 60 Workstation

In addition to announcing a new high-end workstation, Sun is challenging the competition to keep pace as the company continues to lead the UNIX market with aggressive prices and performance for UNIX workstations. Sun is reducing prices on its popular Ultra 60 workstation by as much as 18 percent and is doubling the standard internal disk capacity for even greater value. The entry-level Ultra 60 system is now priced starting at $8,995. This price reduction, coming within weeks of the introduction of a new $1,995 price point for the entry-level Ultra 5 workstation.

Inherent Advantages

Sun systems and services are becoming the standard for technical computing. As more and more commercial and technical computing environments transition to a network-centric model, companies are relying on Sun systems to provide the infrastructure of the worldwide network and the powerful systems that they need to operate in this model. The strength, performance and reliability of the Ultra 80 workstation provides the uptime and scalability that will help colleagues communicate and collaborate over the network, improving time-to-market and return-on-investment.

The Ultra 80 system builds on Sun's strategy to deliver fast, stable, scalable systems at aggressive prices to all levels of technical professionals. Sun's entire 64-bit Ultra workstation line is based on a balanced system architecture that marries industry-leading processor, memory, graphics and I/O technologies to deliver powerful workstations and outstanding graphics price/performance to all levels of computing users. Sun is the only company to deliver complete scalability to the enterprise, from the $1,995 entry-level Ultra 5 system to the data center class 64-way Sun Enterprise 10000 server.

New Software Features Provide Web Mobility and Increased Interoperability

The latest release of the Solaris 7 Operating Environment, version 11/99, which is available for the entire Ultra workstation line, includes several new features that further enhance the Sun desktop experience, such as Web-enabled applications, increased interoperability and desktop productivity, and panoramic image viewing across multiple monitors.

Users can now access their Solaris Operating Environment-based applications from a browser from anywhere at anytime, giving them the freedom to work where and how they need to. Additionally, Solaris Operating Environment users can now synchronize their desktop applications with Palm operating system compatible devices and PC applications to more easily manage projects and schedules, stay organized and keep up with their email. In addition, StarOffice 5.1 (CD SPARC Edition), a premier desktop office productivity suite, is now part of the Solaris Operating Environment Media Kit.

Pricing

Pricing for the new Ultra 80 workstation begins at $15,635 for a system with one 450MHz UltraSPARC-II processor with 4MB cache, 256MB of memory, an 18.2GB hard drive(2) and a PGX32 PCI graphics card. Ultra 60 workstations are available starting at $8,995 configured with one 360MHz UltraSPARC-II processor with 4MB cache, 128MB of memory, a 9GB hard drive and a Sun Creator3D Series 3 graphics card.
