Volume 19, Issue 1

SunForum 3.0 is a free video conferencing and data collaboration program for Solaris. New in version 3.0 is standards-based (H.323) audio and video conferencing, true-color application sharing, enhanced support for enterprise-wide installations, SpeedDials, background execution, and user interface enhancements.

The SunForum product uses industry-standard protocols (T.120 and H.323) to enable Sun workstations to conduct cross-platform audio/video conferences, share applications, conduct whiteboard sessions, and transfer files with colleagues using Sun, Windows, or Macintosh computers. SunForum software can be downloaded from Sun's web site for no charge at:

With SunForum software, Solaris users can collaborate with products such as Microsoft NetMeeting and other data conferencing products that support the ITU T.120 and H.323 standards.

NEW FEATURES

Audio/Video conferencing

Standards-based (H.323) audio and video conferencing allow SunForum software to conduct desktop video conferencing across standard TCP/IP networks. SunForum software supports NetMeeting style point-to-point video conferencing that allows SunForum software to connect to a Windows user running Microsoft NetMeeting.

A unique feature of SunForum software is the ability to conduct multipoint (multicast) video conferences. This allows multiple SunForum software users to conduct a video conference: Everyone in the conference can see and hear each other.

Full-duplex audio with echo suppression

Full duplex audio allows sound to be played and transmitted at the same time. This means that two people in the conference can talk at the same time and still be heard. Echo suppression improves the audio quality when using a microphone and speakers. In conferencing applications without echo suppression, conference members will usually use an operator style headset.

Enterprise configuration support

SunForum 3.0 release has improved support for enterprise installations. A global configuration file may be used by network administrators to limit audio and/or video capabilities in SunForum software. Additionally, SunForum 3.0 release works with network management tools like gateways and gatekeepers.

24-bits-per-pixel application sharing

Support for true-color application sharing has been added to SunForum 3.0 release.

Run-in-background feature

The Run in Background command allows SunForum software to run silently in the background. The user interface does not clutter up the display, but SunForum software monitors the network and notifies the users about incoming conference calls.

Supports NetMeeting-style SpeedDials

SpeedDials are small text files that contain the conference address of a machine. By e-mailing a SpeedDial, it makes it easy for team members to connect together for a conference.

User Interface enhancements

A variety of interface enhancements make SunForum software easy to use and provide full control over the new audio and video capabilities of SunForum 3.0 release.
