Tips for Hardening an Oracle Linux Server
'Secure by Default' Can Be Improved Upon

A recent article on the so-called "secure by default" attributes of Oracle Linux explores a variety of those defaults and administrative approaches that help to minimize vulnerabilities. While Oracle Linux is configured out of the box with settings and utilities that make it "secure by default," authors Lenz Grimmer and James Moreris give system administrators some additional strategies to consider in the following categories:

  • Minimize software and services
  • Tighten networking configuration and user access points
  • Safeguard applications and data by setting up devices, mounts, encryption, and file systems appropriately
  • Implement security features that enforce policies
  • Follow appropriate operational procedures by applying support patches and security updates promptly
