Oracle Solaris Optimization for Intel Processors Pays Off in Many Ways November 7, 2011,
Volume 165, Issue 2
Beefing Up Xeon RAS with Solaris a presentation by Ashok Raj originally given at Oracle OpenWorld 2011, is available as a slide set that covers the following aspects of the talk:
Intel Processor Advances
Platform RAS Components (Oracle Solaris FMA)
Xeon Machine Check Architecture Improvements
Future Enhancements
Raj contends that Oracle Solaris has been optimized for Intel Xeon-based systems in terms of scalability, enhanced power management, and mission critical reliability. This is readily apparent, according to Raj, in Oracle's Fault Management Architecture (FMA), which both monitors and mitigates hardware and software problems. The FMA enhancements cited by Raj that deliver these performance gains include improved diagnostic support for Xeon E7; topology discovery and DIMM identification to support fault-replay, and support for Machine Check recovery from Patrol Scrub and Explicit Write back errors.
