Two patch updates were released in October 2011, reports Eric Maurice in his oracle.com/security blog. One is the October 2011 Critical Patch Update and the other the Critical Patch Update for Java SE/. The latter provides fixes for 20 new security vulnerabilities, Maurice reports, and the former provides fixes for 57 new security vulnerabilities across Oracle Database Server, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Supply Chain Products Suite, Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise, Oracle Siebel CRM, Oracle Linux and Virtualization, and Oracle Sun product suite. He points out that, because of Oracle's diligence in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities, the number of required fixes declines with each passing release.
